PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
He iti te mokora, nāna i kati te kahikatea
The mokoroa (grub) may be small, but it cuts through the Kahikatea
Have courage, no matter what your crosses are.
St Mary MacKillop, 1890
Kia Ora i te whānau kātoa,
Welcome to week 3.
Our Whakatauki reflects on the fact that small things: the mokoroa/grub, can have a great impact. It encourages us to think big. This week we began our week thinking big as we celebrated the Feast day of St. Mary MacKillop with a whole school mass.
We reflected on what we already knew about St Mary MacKillop and how she started small, thought big and became the first Saint in Australia.
We are proud to know and share the following:
St. Mary was born in Australia, the eldest of eight children and that she received her First Holy Communion at the age of nine. We now know that Mary needed to work when she was young so that she could help support her family who came from humble beginnings. As her faith journey grew so did her following. Her team of sisters were known the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Her quote ‘Have courage, no matter what your crosses are’ can be attributed to the challenges she faced in life. Mary was Beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II and Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. We are surrounded and guided every day by the words of St. Mary MacKillop through our Josephite prayers and we are presented with acknowledgements of our actions at Friday assemblies for ‘Never seeing a need without doing something about it’
Thank you Henry and Lottie for representing St Mary MacKillop and Father Julien Tennison-Woods at our whole school mass with Father Paul.

Winter Warmers
Our local community library is once again running "Winter Warmers". This is a voluntary reading challenge where the children need to read or share with their parents at least 10 books (at their level) and do a little activity. There is a booklet to fill out and prizes to be won when the reading is complete. One of the librarians has visiting days at school to check the children's booklets and talk to the children about what they have read.
The booklet has been sent home with your child this week We will let you know when the booklets need to be at school for the librarian. Happy Reading!
Creativity at its best both inside and outside of the classroom
When our learners ‘take action’ with what they know is a compliment to the classroom program. Last week we saw volcano builders, fashion designers, architects and builders.
Onga 7’s
Congratulations to all our players and a big thank you to all our parents who worked together to ensure that the day was a wonderful success.

Whole School Mass
We are excited to be sharing a special Assumption of Mary Mass this Sunday 14th August. You will not want to miss the sensational singing and involvement of our students in this service. We ask that all students be present looking sharp in the school uniform. Following mass we will enjoy a light refreshment in the hall foyer. If each family can bring a plate of finger food to share that would be most appreciated.
What we do everyday makes a difference - Trauma
Trauma is the lasting adverse effects on a person’s or collective’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional or spiritual wellbeing, caused by events, circumstances or intergenerational historical traumatic experiences. (Adapted from SAMHSA, 2012).
Did you know that Trauma potentially impacts all aspects of wellbeing for people, whānau and communities and that many people experience, and continue to experience, trauma in their lives.
What we do everyday at St Joseph’s can make a difference. As shared in our Whakatauki: often it is the small things make the biggest difference when supporting our tamariki through the healing process.
One little change ‘sounds like’ changing the way we offer a listening ear. Instead of asking “What's wrong with you?” ask “What happened to you?” This simple shift in focus from ‘what's wrong’ to ‘what happened’ when shared in a safe environment empowers the person you are trying to help feel comfortable and hopefully to open up and share.
As you round out this week and enter into the weekend, take time to be kind to yourself and offer a helping hand to someone who might need it. I am really looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday morning at mass.

CATHOLIC CHARACTER
Grandparent’s day
Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021. The day takes place annually on the fourth Sunday of July, on or close to the July 26 Feast of Sts. Anne and Joachim, the grandparents of Jesus. As this date was in the school holidays, we transferred the celebration to this Sunday. The theme “intends to emphasize how grandparents and the elderly are a value and a gift both for society and for ecclesial communities,” a press release said. “Our grandparents, who nourished our own lives, now hunger for our attention and our love; they long for our closeness. Let us lift up our eyes and see them, even as Jesus sees us,” Pope Francis stated.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT:
Congratulations to the following students: Kawa, Brooke, Izac, Marco, Mariana, Georgia, Reyansh, Natasha, Paige, Sofia and Archie who last week demonstrated the skills of being caring, organised, and focused learners.

We desperately need more members to be able to keep going. We have some great goals on the go that we would love to continue with your support. If you would like to know more about us please make contact or come along to our next meeting - we meet once a month on a Monday at 7pm at the school, the meeting is usually an hour long max an hour and a half, we keep in touch between meetings through messenger. We are always looking for more helping hands, you can help out when it fits with your schedule - you don't have to attend every fundraiser. We work together on each project, so no one is left on their own. It's a great way to meet other parents and get involved with the school. Dads, Mums, Aunties, Uncles, Grandparents or Friends of the school are all welcome.
