The Lightning Flash
supporting Lightning hockey & promoting girls' youth hockey
Coach's Corner
Believe it or not, July and August are busy hockey months in Grand Rapids -- planning, budgeting, ordering and scheduling for the upcoming season are underway or finished. Every returning and incoming high school girl's hockey player is participating in the Lightning Summer Training program (STP), our off-season program to develop skills, strength and team camaraderie before the ladies scatter to their Fall sports and the start of school again in September. Some of the most important training isn't happening on ice, but instead in the weight-room and in basements or garages where practice stick-handling and shooting reign.
GRG athletes are also making their presence felt at the GRAHA Walleye Tourney, the GR Hockey Golf Classic and will participate in the grand opening of our shiny new Miner Multi-use Pavilion in August -- with a January 27th outdoor game against Alexandria scheduled there for the 17-18 season. Make no mistake, Summer should mostly be reserved to recharge in the sun, at the lake, on the field or wherever the warm Summer breeze brings you...
Watch for youth hockey registration details at GRHOCKEY.com & GAHAMN.org. In the meantime, enjoy the rumbling thunderstorms and lightning strikes of summer now because they won't be present again until the GRG Lightning strike in November!
All the best, GRG Coaching Staff
The Wellness Window
RAISING THE "BAR"
Exercise and sports are an important part of childhood. The lessons learned from team and individual sports are applicable throughout life. Children who establish regular exercise habits will ideally continue them into adulthood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that all school-aged children participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous developmentally appropriate physical activity each day.
Competitive athletes and nonathletes alike may be interested in strength training for various reasons, including their athletic prowess and physique. Interested in off-season conditioning, coaches and athletes often turn their attention to strength training. The primary concerns regarding strength training are safety and its effectiveness. Health care and fitness professional groups—including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association—agree that a supervised strength training program that follows the recommended guidelines and precautions is safe and effective for children.
Strength training, when performed in a controlled, supervised environment, can help children and adolescents of all athletic abilities safely improve their strength and overall health and well-being. The health benefits of strength training far outweigh the potential risks, especially in today’s society where childhood obesity continues to rise.
Captains' Corner
Having 11 seniors graduate last year, I think many people are looking forward to seeing what this year's underclassman have to bring to the 2017-2018 GRG team. The girls were back together in July for some summer action and went 3-0 with wins over Thief River Falls (4-0), Wisconsin (1-0), and Duluth (4-2). Many people were pleasantly surprised with the young talent that is already surfacing in the preseason. We are predicting a successful year driven by a young, energetic group. Be assured your GRG Lightning are going to do their best to make it a great season. We are truly looking forward to what's ahead, and we hope that you are too!!
