"Call it the fault of civilization. God isn't compatible with machinery and scientific medicine and universal happiness. You must make your choice. Our civilization has chosen machinery and medicine and happiness."
Dystopia is an imagined place or state where everything is unpleasant, maleficent, and typically a totalitarian and environmentally degraded. The societies depicted in a dystopian theme are very much based upon the misery and suffering of humanity. This culture in society is also shown today’s modern times through certain aspects. A dystopian society is where there is “Magnification of social problems” ("Dystopian Literature for Young Adults"). In American alone, we can see the magnitude of social problems society runs into when something “unusual” becomes a bit overwhelming. From the beginning of this nation, discrimination against some sort of ”label”, race, religion, sexual preference, etc., has been a major problem of social controversy. Earlier on, it was wrong to be a certain race or religion. Those who were not white were mistreated in America and society accepted the tradition are a moral standard. As time went by and the discrimination against a specific race started to decrease, a new form of discrimination started, gender inequality. The United States have been promoting women’s rights from a long time, but hadn’t really given them the right to vote until the twentieth century. Women demanding rights were ridiculed and looked down upon. The discrimination against gender has not been as big of a modern day dilemma as the fight against sexuality. People with the preferences of having a spouse or partner of their own gender have been discriminated against very much in the recent years. Young children in middle school and high school are bullied by their peers because they choose to love someone that is different from those who others think to be normal. In today’s society, people forget that the concept of love and happiness is not defined in a dictionary and neither do they have a set book of rules that determine what is right or what is wrong. These words just have synonyms that basically enhance the meaning. There is no justifiable way to quantify the validity of a bond between two individuals. There is happiness, love, and prosperity. That’s it. Today’s society is so caught up in science in determining what is right and what is wrong, that they have forgotten that certain intangible aspects of life cannot be proven wrong by logic.
“God’s Not Dead” is a brilliant work of art by the band known as NEWSBOYS. This song is based on the dystopian subtheme of an absence of God proven by the laws of science. Science has many answers to questions, but it cannot answer whether there is a God or if there isn’t. Science is a form of Logic and reasoning. As long as there is an equilibrium between Faith and Logic, the absence of God cannot be truly justified. In the song, the lyricists’ quote,” My God's not dead. He's surely alive. He's living on the inside. Roaring like a lion.” The artist talks about the presence of God through his absence in a society with logical and reason filled views. Faith , in reality, is intellectual suicide, where logic gives a clear path, but faith says to take a leap into the opposite direction. This leap of faith is too risky in a dystopian, modern society. Therefore the concept of God is proven wrong and a myth through reasoning. Reasoning also give a form of instant gratification, where the recipient can see and feel a change more quickly and more physically. Faith does not provide a sense of instant gratification; therefore it is not a hot topic for a futuristic community based on the justifiable means of Logic and reason. The song serves a purpose to show that the well-known subtheme of atheism in a dystopian society is not always a popular way to go about. Faith should not be completely wiped out or humanity will turn into machinery.
As technology progresses, the use and creation of genetically modified foods have very much progressed in society. Though there is much claim to the cleanliness and healthiness of these products, they are still created in a lab and are chemically made. Genetically modified foods come with many disadvantages and loop holes that come into effect while producing. The usage of genetically modified foods is bad for the environment. While many citizens are trying to ‘go green’ and be earth friendly, our environment is actually becoming worse because of growing genetically modified foods. According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, pesticide use has increased by 404 million pounds from the time genetically engineered foods were introduced in 1996 to 2011. Of California stated that GM Crops in sub-Saharan Africa would lead to the loss of biodiversity, kill earthworms and create strains of super-viruses that devastate ecosystems. As GM pesticides are absorbed into the soil, the organisms living in the soil are killed. The Center for Food Safety states the environmental impacts of genetically modified foods will include an “uncontrolled biological pollution, threatening numerous microbial, plant and animal species with extinction…” ("2000+ Reasons Why GMOs Are Safe To Eat And Environmentally Sustainable"). According to a 2013 study by the Center For Food Safety, GMO Canola is spreading by migratory birds, which eat the plants in one area, then fly and deliver “fertilized seeds” to the fields of another area. Along with problems that effect other species and plants, genetically modified foods creates more economic problems, therefore extra money is spent. All of the new genetically engineered plant technologies and resulting GM plants and seeds have been patented. Patented seeds cost more. As a result, farmers in the US who agreed to a “better future through GMO crops” ("2000+ Reasons Why GMOs Are Safe To Eat And Environmentally Sustainable") and signed contracts with Monsanto must pay extra fees including licensing fees, and trade fees in addition to the higher cost of GMO seeds that they are required to plant on their farm. According to the Huffington Post, farmers are required to buy fresh seed every single year, which costs extra money. The Monsanto website even states that more than 275,000 farmers a year buy seed under these agreements in the United States. If this many farmers buy new seeds every year, that would be a lot of money spent. Also, grist.org says that Monsanto are suing each farmer due to cross-pollination in the fields. Monsanto has sued the farmers who don’t currently use Monsanto’s patented GMO seeds. This is because their crops are cross-pollinated from neighboring GMO fields and Monsanto takes them to court for patent infringement. Many scientist believe that GMO’s increase nutrient intake, however a genetically modified plant could theoretically have lower nutritional quality than its traditional counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible to humans. Also in this case, Humanists believe that GMO’s can help reduce malnourishment, but the reality is that Third World countries aren’t accepting GMF given by the US and other countries, have instilled GM crop bans, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Angola, Nigeria, Benin, and Algeria. Genetically modified foods may seem like a great advancement in science, but organic creation and crops are far healthier and better for the environment.
