News from Ms. Hess
In literacy this week, each child selected a picture book from the library that is a narrative nonfiction - stories about real people told in a narrative picture book format. We read examples together as well: enormous Smallness (a book about ee cummings) and A Boy Called Slow (a book about Sitting Bull).
In math, we learned about exponents, powers of 10, and reviewed multiplying 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. If you'd like your child to practice items we've been learning, guide them to IXL: A4, E3, C1, C2
We worked with a partner in Time Traveling this week to create a Google slide about a specific landform in the US. We are already gathering information from two sources and giving credit to those sources on our slides!
Our first science unit, Mixtures and Solutions, opened with an investigation mixing three substances with water and investigating ways to separate those mixtures.
Our band instructor, Mr, Flaherty, welcomed our first band members to the band room on Friday for a first try. As your child chooses an instrument, please have them bring it on a Tuesday or Friday. Students who had band today will again have band next Friday. Anyone who didn't have band on today, is welcome to bring his/her instrument on this coming Tuesday. This is to keep the size of the group small as kids have their first sessions.
Starting Friday, October 6th, whole group band will be on every Tuesday and Friday from 2:20 - 3:00. Musicians will also receive a small group lesson once a week on a Tuesday or Friday.
In addition, we were invited to walk with our friends at Colonial Manor to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease as a community outreach activity. They kindly shared delicious cookies and ginger ale after our walk.
Binder of Awesome home on Monday, September 25!
Please sign and return the binder with your child on Tuesday. Thanks so much!
