January Family Update
The Learning Center 2023
Welcome Back
Greetings TLC Families.
We hope you were able to enjoy the holidays by relaxing and celebrating with your friends and family. We are excited to welcome our students back and begin a new semester. Our shared goal at TLC is to strive each and every day to help our students become life ready after they graduate from high school.
We will start the semester by reviewing expectations with students on a daily basis. Please help support these efforts by reviewing our Behavior Matrix with your student. Please pay close attention to the information regarding cell phones and Chromebooks, which are most the common source of student issues.
Please make sure you have access to Canvas, EOS, and Infinite Campus, so you can support your student behaviorally and academically. If you need assistance or have questions, please access our school website or call the school @ 381-0597.
If you or anyone else you know is interested in volunteering and partnering with TLC, please review the following website and fill out a volunteer application: FCPS Volunteer Information.
There is a Special Program Showcase at Tates Creek on January 6th from 9:30-3:30. This is a great opportunity to explore all of the educational opportunities available in Fayette County, include all three Technical Schools.
Finally, please take the time to nominate a staff member that made a difference for your student(s):
TLC December and January Staff Member of the Month

TLC School Improvement Update
ATTENDANCE--We want every student to have a minimum of 85% attendance for the entire school year.
ACADEMIC GROWTH--We want every student to meet or exceed their MAP Reading and Math Growth Goal.
LIFE READINESS--We want every student to meet the requirement for post secondary readiness according to the Kentucky Department of Education.
Attendance
Last year our average daily attendance was 79.96% and this year our average daily attendance is 81.04%. We are proud of this progress, but we still have work to do, since our goal is 85%. The 9th graders and the 12th graders have the highest percentage of attendance out of all the grade levels.
We know that during the winter months overall attendance traditionally decreases. Please continue to encourage your students to attend school on a regular basis. Nearly all of our students who struggle with attendance, also struggle academically.
How can you help?
- Don't hesitate to reach out if your student is struggling with attendance. We are here to support you.
- Make sure excuse notes are returned within three days of your student's return to school.
- Refer your student for mental health services if that is affecting their attendance: Counseling Consent Form
- Help your student create healthy habits with regards to diet, sleep, and exercise.
- Schedule appointments on days in which school is not in session. Here is the FCPS calendar.
Academic Growth
The best part of of the Spring Semester is that all students have an opportunity to start over with regards to their academic work in each class. They now start with a clean slate.
Please review our Grading Policy at TLC. In particular, here are the categories and weights for each class at TLC:
80% Academics
Summative—60% (Tests, Quizzes, Projects, etc.)
Formative—20% (Classwork, Homework, etc.)
20% Employability Grade (completed daily for each class)
How can you help?
- Make sure you are using Infinite Campus to check grades on weekly basis.
- Make sure you are checking student progress on EOS on a weekly basis.
- Reach out to your student's Advisory teacher if they are struggling academically.
- Help your students create a plan for studying and homework completion outside of school.
Life Readiness
The most important focus for all of the TLC community is to ensure that all of our students graduate "life ready." Each Wednesday at TLC we focus on preparing students for life after high school.
Every other Wednesday (Working Wednesday) we transport our students off campus, so they can interact with the community through post-secondary educational site visits, career site visits, community service, and educational experiences. In addition, we will also bring community contacts into our building as well. We have two upcoming Working Wednesdays on January 10th and January 24th.
Every other Wednesday (D-Day) students work on their portfolio in each class. Each student is required to create a portfolio to demonstrate their accomplishments as they have grown throughout their years at TLC that exemplifies the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate. Students have been working on their portfolio, which is a Google Site designed to showcase their talents, skills, and achievement both inside and outside of the classroom. We have two D-Days this month on January 17th and January 31st.
How can you help?
- Review your student's portfolio.
- Ask you student about their Working Wednesday experiences.
