Planning to Launch!
With the end of the year upon us, those checklists are being completed; classrooms are being packed-up with furntiture moving to one side of the room; posters are taken off the walls; and bookcases covered up. It's always bittersweet to me, as we say goodbye to one year and begin looking forward to some much deserved rest. But, this is also the perfect time to reflect and think about how you would like to set up for an even more successful launch next school year!
As we eagerly await the arrival of our new Units of Study writing resources, I wanted to share some thoughts and ideas to inspire your incubation and planning process to best support a literary environment where students are reading, writing, and talking daily.
What does a Balanced Literacy Block look like?
Increasing Independence Through Gradual Release
The goal of the Reading Workshop Model is to provide students with explicit instruction, guided practice, and most importantly, independent practice with goal setting and "just-in-time" effective feedback through teacher conferring that launches readers toward independence. As students build more stamina, the time spent in independent or partner reading will increase over time.
Sample 1st Grade Schedule:
30 minutes - Word Study (Letterland)
55 minutes - Reading Workshop
55 minutes - Writing Workshop
45 minutes - Guided Reading/Literacy Stations
