New West Elementary Schedule Changes

On Tuesday night, 11/17/20, our North Polk Board of Education made the following decisions:

  • Monday, 11/30/20 through at least Friday, 12/11/20, our Kindergarten-5th grade will operate in a Hybrid format. Preschool will follow their same schedule. Transitional Kindergarten students last names A-K will attend school Tuesday and Thursday and students with last names L-Z will attend school Monday and Friday.

  • For West and Central Elementary we will continue with our two hour scheduled late start on Monday while in the Hybrid Learning Model.

Grades K-4

New Hybrid Schedule starting November 30th:

  • "A" Days: Tuesday and Thursday and alternating Mondays/Last names A-K

(Group A begins 11/30)

  • "B" Days: Wednesday and Friday and alternating Mondays/Last names L-Z

Transitional Kindergarten

New Hybrid Schedule starting November 30th:

  • "A" Days: Tuesday and Thursday -Last names A-K
(Group A begins 11/30)
  • "B" Days: Monday and Friday- Last names L-Z

Please Note: Transitional Kindergarten with last names of L-Z will go EVERY MONDAY.
Transitional Kindergarten students will not attend on Wednesdays.

Preschool:

  • No changes to preschool schedule

There may be some cases where we, as principals, will need to move some students to balance days. If this is the case, you will be contacted by the West or Central offices.

The days in which your child(ren) come to school will run very much the same way that we have been doing so far this school year. On the days where your child(ren) do not report, they will have tasks to complete at home and bring back the next day.

We very much appreciate your continued support during this time. We know that this is a highly stressful time for everyone. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you might have. We’re better together!

Important:

Please be aware that each of the district buildings will have their own schedules.

If you have students in different buildings, it is very important to review the schedule for each building.

ABSENCES/Hybrid DAYS

Attendance expectations remain the same as if students were physically present during the school day. If your student will be absent during the day due to an appointment or illness please email anna.moeckly@northpolk.org and julie.patterson@northpolk.org or call the school office at 515-984-3400.

Hybrid Learning Work

We just wanted to make you aware of what the expectation is on the day students are not in school. Following a day of instruction students will bring work home from school that does not require additional instruction. These activities could include free reading, writing, math boxes, study links, or other independent activities. At this time nothing will be required to be done online although a teacher may share additional online activities once again these are not required.

Group A would bring home their first set of activities on Tuesday (12/1) to be worked on while at home on Wednesday.

Group B would bring home their first set of activities on Wednesday (12/2) to be worked on while at home on Thursday.

Grab and Go Meals

The district is offering grab-n-go lunches to students who are learning at home while in hybrid or virtual models. Lunches can be picked up weekdays from 12:15-1:15pm at one of two pick up locations, and a sign-up is required to help our food service team prepare.

A Note of Gratitude from the West Staff

We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Polk City Chiropractic for providing our ENTIRE West Staff lunch on Monday, November 23rd. It was greatly appreciated!

Also, we would like to thank Tony Haisman at Polk City Fareway for the large donation of brown paper sacks that we use to store students masks in while they are eating lunch!

From the Desk of Nurse Michelle

I want to remind everyone that due to Covid-19, school health professionals will be looking at common symptoms a little differently this year. Covid-19 can present with very mild symptoms. Please see the information listed below (this also came home this week on a card for reference) If your child has any high risk symptom OR 2 or more low risk symptoms- keep them home from school and call their health care provider for further advice. I realize all of the "typical" illnesses are still out there, but the district will follow state and county guidance which means being extra diligent regarding any sign or symptom connected with Covid-19. Please let the school health office know if you have any questions about any of this information.

High Risk Symptoms = new cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell

Low Risk Symptoms = fever, headache, muscle and body aches, fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, congestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
