NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 3 Week 2 : 30 July 2020
Thank you to everyone for your support to raise awareness of the needs of the poor and marginalised in our community. I think the difficulties that we have seen and experienced during this COVID era have helped us to be even more acutely aware of these needs and just how fortunate we are. The generosity of our community has raised $861 which will be passed on to our local chapter of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
Very special thanks to the Austin family. Addison and Haydn's great grandfather sadly passed away recently and the family has donated his 50c coin collection to assist our cause. I’m sure he would be very pleased to see his collection making such a significant difference for others.
INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
When I visited our runners this morning they were in high spirits and performing well. I look forward to hearing all about their efforts when they return during the afternoon.
YEAR 3M ASSEMBLY
I’m excited to see what creative ideas the members of the Year 3M class have to share with us at their Assembly tomorrow morning. Two members from each family are welcome to join us to enjoy the performance.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
The Retreat Day for our First Holy Eucharist candidates, to be held next Wednesday, marks the next step on their journey towards receiving the Sacrament on the weekend of 15 and 16 August. Please remember to keep all of our candidates and their families in your thoughts and prayers

For hygiene reasons the ‘bubbler’ drink fountains around our school have continued to be turned off. KINDERGARTEN CLASS NEWS
After taking a keen interest in bugs at the end of Term Two it was decided that this term we would explore the world of ‘Mini-beasts’.
The children have been very interested in ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and have enjoyed reading the story as well as playing with the augmented reality app. They have also begun to create their own 3D butterfly lifecycle using their individual creativity and ideas to make the four parts:
1. The egg on a leaf
2. The Caterpillar
3. The cocoon / chrysalis
4. The butterfly
The children have also enjoyed having mini-beasts integrated throughout other areas of their learning such as measuring different insects and swatting number flies during maths, finding hidden letters in a tray of plastic bugs and talking and wondering about God who created all of the amazing and unique insects. There is also a ‘Bug Lab’ in which children can explore real insects preserved in resin moulds using magnifying glasses.
This week we were also very lucky to receive a box of silkworms to take care of, together we change their paper and give them fresh mulberry leaves every day. The children are very excited about how much they eat and how quick they are growing and they cannnot wait to see them change into a cocoon.
We are very fortunate to have a marvellous Mud Kitchen made by Mr Winsor put into place near the Uniform shop with a sensational sand pit for our play cooking. Thank you Mr Winsor.
On Monday the children had a visit from ‘Kids Nature Club’. They brought along some real live insects for the children to touch and explore, they were also given the opportunity to create their own bug using natural materials. An amazing time was had by all!

SPORTS NEWS
2020 Cross Country Carnival - Tomato Lake Reserve
Last Thursday, 23 July, students from Years 3 - 6 participated in the annual Notre Dame Cross Country carnival held at Tomato Lake Reserve. It was great to finally have a carnival up and running again this year! We were blessed with beautiful weather and all students were excited. We started the day with a walk on the track so all students would be familiar with where they needed to run and we stationed our parent helpers and staff course supervisors.
Years 3 & 4 students ran a 1.2km track with Years 5 and Year 6 completing a 1.5km track. The day started with Year 3 in their first ever cross country carnival and they did not disappoint! This year group will be the one to look out for in our future carnivals with some consistently fast finishers in both the boys' and girls' race. Throughout the day there were some fantastic performances across all year groups and I would also like to thank the Faction Captains for their assistance in preparing all students for their races and motivating their factions.
Well done to all factions but yet again Presentation, formerly known as Prendiville, came out on top this year with fantastic consistent performances throughout all year groups. Many thanks to our wonderful parents who come down to assist with jobs as well as cheer on all students. Of course, many thanks to our wonderful staff who always ensure the smooth running of every carnival and providing all students have an enjoyable day. Below are the Champion Boy & Girl results along with the final points and placings.

Kristy explains the neuroscience behind why your child throws techno-tantrums.
Unlike regular’ tantrums, techno-tantrums persist way past three years of age. There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with your child and no, it doesn’t mean they’re addicted to technology, or that you should ban the device. In fact, they’re having a ‘typical’ neurobiological response.
This video will help confused and concerned parents understand their child’s behaviour and best of all be armed with simple (mum-tested) strategies to prevent them from occurring.
Often times when people hear that children shouldn’t be given consequences or put in time out, but rather understood empathically and championed developmentally, they get worried! Usually, the worry is that this means it is going to be Disneyland-party time parenting with kids who rule the roost.
Here Dr Vanessa shares how this is definitely not the case, that compassionate parenting is full of rules and boundaries, and just how to go about it all so you can strike the balance of being both firm and kind
