Introducing 1:1 Chromebooks!
Welcome to the Baker Chromebook Program
Dear Baker Middle School Parents,
Baker prepares students for an ever-changing world, in which technological advancements occur at a rapid rate. We believe that part of our job as educators involves helping students develop the skills they need to be citizens of the 21st Century: creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Thanks to a generous donation, beginning this Fall, each Baker Middle School student will be issued a Chromebook laptop. The Google Chromebook is a tool that allows emphasis to be placed on effective and transformative learning. The individual use of the Chromebook empowers students to become self-directed, creative, producers of knowledge.
The Chromebook devices that will be issued to students are the property of Baker, and are made available to 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Prior to graduation, students must return their Chromebooks to Baker. We ask that families provide a carrying case. Baker will offer optional (but highly recommended) Insurance for $50/year to cover damages to the computer. However, if the family decides not to pay for the coverage, any damage or replacement will be paid by the family.
We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to our students. For further information about the program, Chromebooks, and digital safety, please see our program website Baker 1:1 Chromebooks. Since students will be using these devices at school and at home, parental involvement will be essential. This website also provides helpful information for parents. If you have any further questions, please feel free to visit Baker Chromebooks Blog, our online platform dedicated to questions and answers regarding the program.

Baker Demonstration School Chromebook Agreement for Students & Parents 2015-2016
The policies, procedures, and information laid out within this document apply to all Chromebooks used at Baker Demonstration School as well as all other technological devices considered by the Administration to come under this policy.
Chromebook Procedures for Students and Parents
- Students will receive their Chromebooks in the next several weeks. Before Chromebooks are issued, students and parents MUST SIGN and return THE NEW CHROMEBOOK AGREEMENT (this document). This is an extension of the Baker Responsible Use Policy that you both signed at the beginning of the school year.
Students will receive initial training with follow-up training throughout the school year. Once issued, the Chromebook becomes the responsibility of the student. Students will be expected to follow the Chromebook User Guidelines as well as the Responsible Use Policy.
Please refer to the Baker 1:1 Chromebooks website, created for students and parents, for more in- depth information regarding use, care, digital citizenship, Google Apps for Education and Online Safety Resources.
Taking Care of Your Chromebook
Students are responsible for the general care of their Chromebook and for any and all damage that might occur, unless Insurance is purchased through Baker. A carrying case will help protect the device traveling throughout the school during the day, as well as during transport to and from home. Chromebooks are intended for use at school each day; so make sure the device is fully charged each morning.
Please keep food and drink away from the Chromebooks.
Use care when inserting cords, cables, and removable storage devices.
Chromebooks and pets are not compatible! Fur can damage electronics.
Chromebook Screens are not for lifting or carrying your device!
Be very careful if you place your Chromebook in your backpack. Make sure heavy pressure is not applied to the Chromebook, especially the screen side.
Be careful to not put pressure or heavy objects on the top of a Chromebook when it is closed.
Always store your Chromebook with the screen closed.
Whether in a protective case or a backpack, do not place anything inside that will press against the cover.
Make sure there is nothing on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, or USB drives).
Only clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth or anti-static cloth.
Student Expectations for Using Your Chromebook at School
Screensavers, background photos, decals and decorations are to be appropriate for the school environment. The presence or suggestion of inappropriate, illegal, or distracting language and/or behaviors will not be allowed.
Students are expected to charge their Chromebook every evening. The devices should last an entire school day with no problem, but if the battery does run low, charging stations will be available in each classroom
Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher.
Playing music from the Chromebook and use of personal earphones are at the discretion of the classroom teacher.

Students will log into their Chromebooks using their school-issued Google Apps for Education account.
Appropriate Use in the Classroom
As stated above, student Chromebooks are to be used for educational purposes and students are to adhere to the Responsible Use Policy (RUP) and all of its corresponding administrative procedures at all times.
Students are expected to use their Chromebooks appropriately and for educational purposes. Should a student use his/her Chromebook inappropriately, he/she will be subject to disciplinary actions.
Students may not use calculators or notes on their Chromebook during quizzes or tests unless given permission by their teacher.
Students should check their Baker email and myBaker accounts daily to stay current with announcements and assignments.
Students may not take pictures or record any other students or teachers during class or outside of class, without their prior permission from a teacher.
Students may not browse the Internet or use apps during class time unless otherwise instructed to do so by their teacher.
Using Your Chromebook Outside of School
Any use of technology, both on or off campus, which violates the Baker Technology RUP or the Chromebook Agreement could result in disciplinary measures. Students are reminded that their conduct off- campus also includes the Internet. Online journals/blogs (including but not limited to: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or any other social media platform) must not be used to demean, harass, or threaten anyone. Students’ use of electronic media off campus that causes physical or emotional harm could receive disciplinary action. Disciplinary consequences may result as off-campus conduct comes into and affects members of the Baker community.
Violations of federal, state, and local ordinances and/or the fundamental philosophy of Baker Demonstration School not specifically mentioned herein are also cause for disciplinary action by the school.
Safety and Privacy
- The Chromebook operating system, Chrome OS, updates itself automatically. Students do not need to manually update their Chromebooks.
Chromebooks use the principle of “defense in depth” to provide multiple layers of protection against viruses and malware, include data encryption and verified boot. There is no need for additional virus protection.
Students may not use or install any operating system on their Chromebook other than the current version of ChromeOS that is supported and managed by Baker.
Students should have no expectation of confidentiality or privacy with respect to any usage of their Chromebook, whether for school or personal use.
The school may, without prior notice or consent, log, supervise, access, view, monitor, and record use of student Chromebooks at any time, for any reason deemed necessary by Administration. By using a Baker Chromebook, students agree to such access, monitoring and recording of their use.
Baker uses a monitoring and management platform (GoGuardian) to assist with keeping students on track and managing devices.
Damage, Repairs and Vendor Warranty
Students should bring damaged Chromebooks to Mr. Hagy, Information Systems Manager, for assessment. If the Chromebook is damaged due to negligence and not covered by the warranty, or the family did not pay the optional insurance fee, the student and family will be responsible for repairs or purchasing a replacement device, just as they are for lost, stolen, or damaged textbooks.
- A loaner Chromebook may be issued to students when they are in need of ordering a new device., subject to availability.
- A student borrowing a Chromebook must sign a loaner agreement and will be responsible for any damage or loss of the issued device.
- If a new Chromebook has to be ordered because of damage, parents will need to place the order with Baker.
- Chromebooks on loan for this purpose may not be taken home by the student.
- Students will be expected to return the loaner at this time.
- Baker will contact the student when their device has been repaired or delivered.
- Chromebooks include a one year hardware warranty from the vendor.
- The vendor warrants the Chromebook from defects in materials and workmanship.

Consumables including but not limited to the case, charger and software

Once a Chromebook is reported lost or stolen, the device will be locked down so that it cannot be used by anyone. The Chromebook can be unlocked if returned to Baker. Every effort will be made to recover a stolen device; parents are encouraged to file a police report for any stolen Chromebook device as soon as possible. Insurance companies will require a police report in order to file a claim.

Internet Use and Parental Involvement
Parents and guardians are to understand that Internet access at Baker is intended for educational purposes. Internet use is NOT private and Baker Demonstration School reserves the right to monitor student use of the Internet at any time.
Parents and guardians should recognize that it is impossible for Baker Demonstration School to restrict access to all controversial and inappropriate materials. Parents and guardians will hold harmless Baker Demonstration School, its employees, agents or board members for any harm caused by materials or software obtained via the school’s technology resources. Parents and guardians understand that they will be legally responsible for their student’s actions and accept full responsibility for supervision if and when their student’s use of the school’s technology resources or the Internet is not in a school setting.
Outside of school, parents bear full responsibility for monitoring their student’s use of the Internet. Parents are highly encouraged to communicate with students on the importance of safe, responsible and ethical use of the Internet from any device in any location.
