Auburn Middle School Monthly
December 2019
The Principal's Perspective, by Mr. Desto
This past month, I couldn’t have been prouder to be a part of the Auburn Middle School community. It was truly humbling to see the charitable spirit that has lifted our school during the holiday season. In addition to the usual happenings at a school, like classes, tests, homework, meetings, athletics, musical events, etc., our staff and students spent countless hours trying to bring some holiday joy to those in need.
As many of you are aware, we had a very successful food drive to benefit local families through Auburn Youth and Family Services. AMS students and staff were able to donate enough food to feed over 60 families. Right now, we are in the midst of a holiday toy drive to once again benefit children through AYFS. As I sit here writing this, we have well over 300 toys and counting. All the while, our staff donates $1 per person per week with the proceeds going to a variety of worthy causes.
Honestly, I was and remain exceedingly proud of the thoughtfulness and self-sacrifice exhibited in this school on a daily basis. I see great things in the people, both young and (not so) old, who walk through these doors each day. My job isn’t easy, but what a blessing it is to see such good in people at a time in history where much of what you hear is so negative.
Here at AMS, the word of the month is “empathy,” which I define simply to the students as the ability to put oneself in another’s shoes. This time of year, empathy is demonstrated perhaps more strongly than at any other time throughout the year. Each day, on morning announcements, I tell the students the true story of something that happened on that day in history, usually with a lesson that slants toward the word of the month. Last week, I shared the story of former multimillionaire movie mogul Scott Neeson who, as president of 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures, oversaw such blockbusters as Independence Day, Titanic, Braveheart and X-Men.
We capped the week by viewing the video linked below – please take 7 minutes to check it out – you are sure to be inspired by it.
Finally, on behalf of the 70 dedicated staff members here at AMS, please accept my best wishes for a joyous holiday season. Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hannukah, another holiday or no holiday at all, we are grateful for your support throughout the year and wish you peace, safety and enjoyment as we transition from 2019 into 2020.

Thank You!
Respectful Request from the AMS Staff
With that stated, this capability can be a distraction to our students during the school day. More and more, I am hearing about students not getting as much out of their education as possible because they are communicating electronically (usually through email) with their parents during the school day.
While we understand the comfort that can come from being in constant touch with the children we love, we respectfully request that you refrain from contacting your children between 7:30-2:15. If there is an emergency or very serious reason for which you need to contact your child, please contact the front office, and we will be sure he/she gets the message or, if necessary, can get in touch with you.
Thank you so much for your help.
