The Power of Words

Dear MS Family,

The holiday season is upon us and the Elf has returned to our home. Before Thanksgiving was over, MiKai and Ma'Kaila began talking about The Elf coming to visit. They were so excited! I'm glad they mentioned it - I would have forgotten ALL about it. It's amazing the difference a toy can make in the behavior of a child. I wish I would have thought of the idea!

The elf arrived! They searched the house and finally found her. As soon as the elf was located, they spoke differently to each other. They weren't complaining about having to do their homework quite as much. The best part is that I didn't have to remind them to be kind to each other. I invoked the elf's name and told them both - The elf won't move if you say mean things to each other. Ma'Kaila immediately turned to the elf to say, "I'll tell you all the nice things my brother says to me." MiKai said, "Aww" and gave her a big hug. I couldn't help but smile; those words - that action - changed my mood.

It was at that moment that I saw the power of words - my words. If I share something positive - it can change someone's mood. My words can alter the way someone thinks about him/herself. What I say can change the way I'M thinking. When I read the article below entitled, "Say This, Not That" - it made me think of sharing my thoughts, but also always seeking solutions.

A goal that I have set for myself is to reflect on my words - how they affect my mindset and my mood. I'm going to be more like Ma'Kaila and MiKai (when the elf is in the room) - thinking in a positive way, so that I can potentially have a positive impact on those around me.
