Connecting Class to Community with Flipgrid AR
Overview
In today's educational technology world, itis becoming easier and easier to connect with parents. Schools can digitize newsletters, teachers can create a website with a variety of information, and schools can be active on social media. But, one tech tool that has completely revolutionized how we can make this connection is Flipgrid, with its availability of Flipgrid AR. Once students record their videos, they can then create QR codes from them. Then, with the Flipgrid app, once the QR code is scanned, it will come alive as if the video is being played in a three-dimensional format. Below are several ways that this can be utilized to bridge the connection between the school/classroom and the community.
Record a Welcome Message
One of my favorite uses of Flipgrid in its "regular" form is the "Back to School" messages. This is where a principal sets up a grid and has teachers record who they are, what they did over the summer, and what they're looking forward to in the upcoming school year. This is then shared with parents in a welcome back newsletter. That allows parents to know who their students' teachers are and a little about them before the school year even begins. If teachers created their video, they can then use that QR code in their own welcome back newsletter if they wish, so their video could be showcased and make their letter more interactive.
Valentine's Day Messages
Visual Directions
We have all had instances where a student misses a really important day in class, whether a lab was done, an essay was started, or an art project was started. A great way to combat this is to record the important part that walks students through the beginning stages. Then, place that QR Code on a sheet of directions, or in Google Classroom. That way, students can either watch that video prior to coming to class, or have an AR view of a project they can easily catch up on when they return.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Since the parents that attend Parent-Teacher Conferences don't travel the school each day, they may not know how to get around the school very easily. Have the students provide a verbal tour of the classes using Flipgrid, and then distribute that QR code as they enter the building. Parents can then watch the video as they're led through the school, stopping at each room where the conferences will be held. So, not only are they easily able to navigate to each class, there's a personal touch since it is narrated by their student as well.
