Digital Update -- February 2017

OVHS & OVMS Students Find Their SPARC!

On the afternoon of Friday, January 20, 2017, students in grades 7 and 8 traveled to the high school. There they joined high school freshmen and sophomores to participate in an event entitled "Life after High School - Finding your SPARC (Students Paving a Road to Careers)."

During the event students were able to visit representatives from BB&T, East Penn Manufacturing, Albright College, Ursinus College, Reading Area Community College, Kutztown University, Penn State University, the US Army and Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences.

Students were also able to participate in mock interviews, how to keep/lose a job challenge, a tie tying demonstration, a dress for success demonstration and they were able to create their own SPARC, identifying what careers they were interested in pursuing after high school.

Heather Adams, from BCTV was the keynote speaker, sharing pertinent information about the skills needed to acquire and retain employment and how to translate those experiences into a career.

Thank you to the OVHS and OVMS School Counselors for organizing the day's events.

Creativity That Helps Others

During the holiday season in art class, third grade students created designs that shared their love of art in a poster design. The poster designs were voted on by the entire third grade and one design was chosen from each homeroom. The winning designs were printed on bags that were filled with art supplies, donated by third grade students and parents. The bags were delivered to Opportunity House in Reading, just in time for Christmas. Not only did the students participate in a drawing contest to determine the top designs to be placed on the bags but they also learned about giving in the process. With this lesson, they shared their love for art and for giving!

OVMS Students Compete in Geography Bee

Seventh and eighth grade Social Studies students recently completed the first round of the National Geography Bee at OVMS. Classroom winners were determined after answering seven rounds of trivia questions related to U.S. states & capitals, oceans, native wildlife, and foreign countries. These talented winners moved onto a second round of competition involving similar questions. On Friday, January 27, eighth grader, Zain Wegman, was named the school winner and seventh grader, Kristina Kauffman, earned the first runner-up title. Zain will move onto a third round of competition during which he will take an online geography test. His score will earn him a ranking among other students in Pennsylvania and put him in line to earn a $50,000 scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands! Congratulations to Zain and all our participants!

Art Teacher Recognized

OVMS Art Teacher, Mrs. Stacy Olexy, was recognized by the Berks County Association of School Retirees. She is currently working with her 8th grade students to complete a mural project inspired by "Red" Hong Yi. Students were given the task of creating portraits that represent people that students believe made change in the world. Additionally these portraits were made out of unusual materials that tie to the person being created. The mural can be found in the hallway of the OVMS near the gymnasium.

German Language Classes Have A Busy First Semester

German students have been very busy this fall. German I has been learning the vocabulary for free time activities and how to construct thoughts into comprehensible German sentences.

German II has concentrated on fashion and held a very dynamic fashion show just before Thanksgiving.

German III is now capable of speaking in the past tense and constructed children’s books about a favorite past event.

German IV worked really hard on including adjectives in their speaking and writing and has just concluded a unit on German artists. They can now describe the paintings auf Deutsch!

Extracurricular activities have included cookie and advent calendar sales, a trip to the Reading Liederkranz for dinner and dancing, celebrating Sankt Nikolustag and the construction of gingerbread houses during German Club. We are looking forward to our annual trip to Penn State German Day in State College, to meet with and compete against German students from across the state.
