Springing into MCAS

MCAS season is upon us.

Just after April vacation, MCAS testing will be starting at OMS. The dates for each session are included in this newsletter and listed on the calendar on our school website. Students who are absent during one of the regularly scheduled testing sessions, will have plenty of time to for make-ups during our testing window. On each of our testing days, students will start the morning in their first period classes and be called to their testing rooms around 7:45am. It is important for students to be on time to school on testing days.

For the second year in a row, students in all grades will be taking the "next generation" MCAS in Mathematics and English Language Arts. As required by the state, 7th and 8th graders will be taking the computer-based test. 6th graders will be taking the paper-based test.

8th graders will also take the Science Technology/Engineering MCAS.

The MCAS is an important statewide assessment. Students can sometimes get anxious about assessments like these. When they do, we like to remind them that they have been preparing for these assessments all year long. They have been practicing and developing the types of skills they will be asked to apply on the MCAS. They are prepared. They are ready. This is not the type of assessment where night-before cramming is going to help. Instead, we remind students to prepare themselves to give their very best effort and to apply what they have practiced all year long in the classroom on the MCAS.

It is important for students to get a good night's sleep before each testing day. It is also important to eat a good breakfast on the morning of each testing day. Another piece of advice for students is to expect a challenge. We encourage our students to stick with the challenging material they will inevitably encounter on MCAS, to try their very best and never give up. We encourage families to reinforce these messages at home during the spring MCAS season.

Best of luck!

OMS Drama Club's Spring Musical a Big Hit!

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Shrek, the Musical Junior, this year's spring musical. The Drama Club put on three amazing performances to large crowds in the cafetorium. Ms. Bauman, Ms. Crowley, and Mr. Block directed a talented group of performers for this year's show. The stage crew worked behind the scenes, and several members of our school community, including teachers, parents, and students, chipped in to make this year's show the best one yet. Please click on the link below to check out the Brockton Enterprise article from opening night. Great job everybody!

The 58th Annual Stoughton Woman's Club Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, March 29th in the cafetorium. More than 45 of the best spellers in the school, having competed already on their teams, competed for first, second, and third place overall. Congratulations to Devin Ural (3rd place), Weronika Kasperkiewicz (2nd place), and Zachary Mandosa (1st place). A special thank you to the Stoughton Woman's Club for sponsoring the spelling bee, one of the longest running traditions at the O'Donnell Middle School.
