Due for all sections: Sunday, April 30, before midnight.
The Assignment:
Symbolism Analysis ELO - The Great Gatsby - Main Point #1 Paragraph
This project is designed to ensure that you have a complete understanding of the symbolism used by F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. I noticed after reviewing several projects, as well as the Gatsby Rough Drafts, that there were still many students who did not fully understand Fitzgerald's purpose in using these symbols within the novel.
If you complete the instructions, below, in their entirety, and have a complete understanding of the symbol you chose, you will receive up to 10 points on your Gatsby Setting Map and Chart Project:
- You will write Main Point #1 paragraph of a literary analysis of a symbol used in Gatsby from this ELO list, only.
- If this is your topic in your Gatsby essay, you may use this as a "rough draft," but make sure it is even better than your original draft - this should be worthy of a Final Draft!
- This paragraph must be at least 10+ long sentences.
- This paragraph must use at least 4+ partial quotes from the text that support your analysis of this symbol.
- This paragraph must use MLA Format
- Your 1st sentence must be your Main Point Topic Sentence (MPTS) #1.
- MPTS#1 must be persuasive - it must make a persuasive point about author's purpose - answer this question: For what rhetorical (persuasive) purpose is Fitzgerald using this symbol in Gatsby?
- You MUST use the "1-2-3 Rule" - Context-Evidence-Analysis - in the use of your context, partial quotes, and analysis; otherwise, full credit will not be given. You must learn to use this format for all persuasive essays!
- This paragraph must cite your Gatsby novel, including page numbers, etc.
- You are allowed to use Shmoop as your analysis source - they have a plethora of context, setting, and analytical information regarding Gatsby.
- This paragraph must cite any analysis you use from Shmoop and other sources. If you are directly quoting from Shmoop, you must use quote marks and cite this as your source; otherwise, it's plagiarism - I am encouraging you to search and use Shmoop, so that you have a deeper understanding of the novel.
- Your last sentence in this paragraph will be a transitional one from this paragraph's symbol to your next symbol in your next main point (good practice for your papers).
The Rubric:
