SSMS Weekly Update

April 8, 2022

Hello SSMS Tiger Nation,

We'd like to start by saying THANK YOU to the community and PTA for the assistant principals luncheon on April 7. PTA treated us and our entire staff to a delicious taco spread, complete with all the fixin's. We are feeling the love and appreciate your support so much!

Included below is our STAAR calendar. STAAR scores are an important indicator of progress and help our staff understand what your child knows and what they need to learn to be successful at the next level. Our teachers use many data sources to create lesson plans, and STAAR is one of our best data sources.

Please mark these STAAR dates on your calendar and make sure your child is in attendance unless they are sick. STAAR is taken on district Chromebooks.

We have a slight change in ZAP (zeroes aren't permitted) procedures. Students and parents of students who are ZAPped will be notified Friday morning via email. Students will also receive a note in their first class of the day Friday informing them they have ZAP that day and what their missing assignments are of that class.

Finally, we are starting a series in our weekly newsletter called the Student Leaders Spotlight. We will feature a different group of amazing student leaders each Friday. This week's Student Leaders Spotlight is on the PALs (peer assistance leaders) program. PALs is a class that includes 7th and 8th graders who mentor and support elementary students at SSE, RSE, and CSE. Our PALs receive rigorous training in how to effectively mentor younger students and help them learn important skills to build self awareness, self esteem, and self confidence.

Our PALs program is coordinated by Dr. Kira Dyer, who also teaches science and is our science department chair. Thank you PALs for your leadership! You make a positive difference in our community.

Tiger Tip Line

The Tiger Tip Line allows students or parents to report concerns about bullying, other social issues, or security matters. The name of the school must be included, and it is requested that details of an incident being reported include location, time, date, and any available information about who was involved to help administrators investigate. Tips can be made anonymously or with a name. However, please note that administrators are able to do a more thorough job investigating tips when they can contact the reporting party for additional information.

It is important to note that messages are received during business hours only as they are checked by school administrators.
