"That's Not Fair!"
“That’s not fair!” Have you ever heard this familiar phrase from your child? Chances are if you have more than one youngster in the house, it has been shared (or screamed) a time or two. Even with just one child, it seems any time they are faced with less than their ideal choice, life becomes overwhelmingly unfair.
Author Dan St. Romain shares a story in Teach Skills and Break Habits about a time a teacher went to the store and bought three pairs of the same sized shoes for students in his classroom. As the students entered, he offered them a pair of shoes. Inevitably, the students turned him down. When asked why, they responded by saying that the shoes weren’t the correct size. Exasperated, the teacher explained he couldn’t give everyone a different sized shoe because that just wouldn’t be fair!
Fair doesn’t necessarily mean one-size-fits-all. In school, “fair” means getting what we need in order to learn. This applies to academic learning as well as behavior and discipline. Teachers skillfully create lesson activities considering individual students’ strengths and challenges each day. At the beginning of the year, this can be difficult because typically students have a new teacher from grade to grade. This is where parents can serve as critical partners!
Scheduling a time to meet with your child’s teacher is important at the start of the year. If you can’t meet at the school, a phone call is the next best option. Sharing your child’s interests, habits, goals, strengths, and areas for growth will provide the teacher with insight to provide him/her with what they need as an individual learner. CCES will have parent conferences on October 15, but you are always welcome to reach out and request a meeting sooner. Your engagement is the best way to ensure your child gets what he/she needs in order to get an exceptional (and fair) education!

The Importance of Being Optimistic
This 9 weeks in all of our guidance classes we are discussing the importance of being optimistic. We are reading When Pigs Fly by Valerie Coulman. It’s a fun book about a cow who approaches a challenge with the power of yet. I encourage you to ask your child questions about what it means to be truly optimistic and how we can easily overcome challenges by simply approaching things with a positive attitude.

Volunteers Around Campus:
Spurs What'cha Reading Program
CCES will be participating in the Spurs What’cha Reading Program September 3rd through October 4th! This program gives students an opportunity to win prizes individually and at the school level for reading at least 20 minutes per day (younger students can be read to).
On Tuesday, students will receive a log to record minutes read (outside of the classroom) each day. Please help your students remember to record the minutes read and then total the minutes after October 4th.
All logs must be returned to the classroom teacher by October 10th in order to be counted with the school totals. Please contact Mrs. Brinson at April.brinson@boerneisd.net if you have any questions.
