Why Writing Workshop? By the Partnership for Inquiry Learning
You may be wondering why we are using writing workshop for or writing instruction model. This week's topic about writing workshops from an article by the Partnership of Inquiry Learning may help answer some of your questions.
"Writing workshop increases confidence in writing ability"
Students develop a sense of craft in writing workshop. They read like writers to see what strategies other authors employ to effectively convey meaning and emotion, shape and organize material, make texts lively and compelling. As thoughtful, deliberate researchers, students then apply this knowledge across texts, genres and subject matter. Because workshop teaching focuses on improving each writer’s breadth and depth of understanding of craft, students acquire the tools necessary to improve not only the project in hand but also future writing endeavors.

Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).
*A safe visitor background check is required for all school volunteers. For more information on background checks, visit https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering.

We Are Learning...
Reading
In reading this week we learned how to better identify important information in nonfiction texts. Many of the students are reading books that work well with their nonfiction writing. When we know or can predict the type of information a book may contain by using clues such as book title and headings on pages, we can decide quickly whether this book will be something that will help us learn new stuff or simply add to what we already know.
Writing
This week in writing we have been working so hard this week studying our mentor texts. We have been keeping in mind as we write this week 2 things. First we need to remember our audience as we are writing. We learned that when we are considering our audience, we also need to remember to make our writing interesting. As we read our nonfiction, we try to think what is the author doing in this book that makes it so enjoyable to read? We then see if we can mimic that powerful craft move in our own writing. We also tried writing on a post it note, who our audience is. That was it is there on our books as a constant reminder for us as the writer!

I am very impressed with their hard work and am still excited to see what will come from all this hard work.
