What do the Dietary Guidelines do for Americans?

Health Risk-The likelihood of developing health problems such as heart disease,diabetes.and some cancer.


Diet-is an eating plan referred to everything you eat and drink.

Getting enough nutrients within your calorie needs.

4 factors that determine calorie needs-Your age,gender,activity level,and whether you are trying to gain ,maintain,or lose weight.


Nutrient dense food-is a food that provides high amounts of vitamins and minerals for relatively few calories.

How to maintain a healthy weight.

Risk factor-is a condition that increases your chances of developing a problem.


Health problems that are linked to having too much body fat is diabetes,heart disease,high blood pressure,some types of cancer,and arthritis.


Underweight can lead to loss of energy and other health problems.


Loosing weight you need to have physical activity and dieting.

Suggestions for being physically active everyday.

Being physically active helps control your weight and strengthens your heart and lungs.


Teens should have 60 min or more in there daily routine.


Get involved in a team or individual sport and walk or ride a bike.

Importance of whole grains,fruits,vegetables and milk.

These foods are nutrient rich,cholesterol free and low in fats.


They protect you from getting heart disease and cancer.


Eat for dessert,snacks and or breakfast.

How to limit fats and cholesterol.

Unhealthy fats are saturated fats and trans fats and they can raise cholesterol.


Heart disease from too much fat.


Keep saturated fats to less than 10% of your calories,eat less trans fats,eat dairy that are reduce fat,and less solid fats like butter.

Be choosy about carbohydrates.

Fruit and milk are natural sugars


Candy and soft drinks are added sugars.


Sugars and starch promotes tooth decay so limit sugar intake.

Why reduce sodium and increase potassium?

Sodium helps control body fluids.


Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure,heart attack,and stroke.


Potassium helps counteract sodium's effects on blood pressure.

Avoid alcohol

Drinking can lead to accidents,judgment and influence.

Why is food safety an important part of the dietary guidelines?

Food safety is an important part so we don't end up with disease fromeating too much bad foods and so we can be healthy.
