The Principal's Ponderings
Students may pick up exemption forms from their House Office. Students may turn in forms to the House Office beginning Thursday, December 14 and until 8:45 am on Monday, December 18. Each grade level will have a different color form that has the maximum amount of exemptions possible for each grade level: 9th = 1; 10th = 2; 11th = 3; 12th = 4.
Guidelines are listed at the top of the student forms. Reminder: students must have an 80 or above for the semester average and no more than 2 absences during the fall semester. Teachers will check all guidelines before signing that a student has met criteria for an exemption in his/her class.
All Excused (E) & Unexcused (U) absences count. (D12=UIL, T=Tardy, M33= College Visit, M20= Religious D10=Field Trip do not count against their exemptions)
If a student has been in ISS, Suspended, or DAEP (RightTurn), even 1 day, they are not eligible for exemptions (Those are identified at “I”, “S”, “Y”, and “R”).
Students are required to attend classes in which they are exempt on examination days. An exemption is an exam exemption and not an attendance exemption. If a student is absent on exam day, that absence does count against exemptions.
Once forms are turned in there will be no changes, except in the event of a loss of exemption due to absences, grades, ISS, etc.
Choice of exemptions MUST be complete at the time form is turned in.
There MUST be a parent signature on the form regardless of the student’s age.
Forms must be turned in by Monday, December 18 @ 8:45 am and complete, including all signatures.
Once forms are received in the House Office, the names of the students approved for exemptions will be entered into a Google Spreadsheet and shared, with teachers, via email.

From the Student Support Counselor
Next week is finals. If I had a dime for every student that came to me this week in shear panic over their grades and potentially failing a class, well let’s just say I might be able to fill my gas tank. However, if you think about it, that’s a lot of kids at a dime a piece. LOL
So, I am assuming many of these behaviors are occurring at your home as well. In fact, many of you may be in a panic yourself over your kid’s grades. Yes, you may be contributing to the stress and pressure that your student is already feeling, and making the situation worse for them. Now, Christine, surely you’re not advocating that we NOT talk to our kids about their grades, studying, responsibilities, etc. Of course not! What I am advocating is to be mindful of how we approach our kids about these delicate issues.
Let them know that you have seen their grades and ask what you can do to support them in achieving the best grade possible at this point. Can you bring them early, pick them up later, etc. so that they can attend some tutoring sessions in preparation for their finals? Can you help them by quizzing them, going over notes with them, etc? Please, please, keep in mind, that the chances of them “making up for” missing assignments, etc. is pretty slim at this point. Please don’t ask them to ask their teacher about extra credit. If a student has five missing assignments, they don’t need extra credit. They need to turn in their assignments in a timely fashion!
Remember, the core classes are year-long classes and if you’re student is failing this semester and it’s not looking like there’s any hope of them pulling it out, then try to look at the big picture. What does the student need to make next semester to ensure that the average of the two semesters equates to a 70 or above? Now that you are aware your kiddo isn’t keeping up, doesn’t understand, whatever the case may be, you can start the second semester being more watchful on their habits and grades.
If your kid is failing a class that is only one semester long, this is also not the end of the world. It may mean that your student has to give up a preferred elective later to retake this class, or some other option that they can discuss with their house counselors-after the break :).
Time management and organizational skills are not things that most teenagers come by naturally. These are skills that have to be taught to most of them, or they are learned over time by trial and error. If you find that it seems like the low grade is less a lack of understanding the material, one or both, of these may be a factor. If you have good skills in these areas, help your student find a system that works best for them, keeping in mind that what works for you may not be exactly what works for them. Google techniques or go on YouTube. There are tons of videos out there featuring high school and college students sharing their tips. As you are all too aware, your kids are more likely to listen to their peers.
Take some deep breaths. Think before speaking to your kids about their grades. They will be defensive and trying to deflect. Listen for the real message in there and try to determine the cause-lack of understanding, lack of organization, poor time management, too many activities, staying up too late, too much social media, etc. Once the root cause is found, it will be easier to find a solution.
Please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have. Also, please let me know if there is a topic in the future that you would like me to cover!
Have a safe and blessed holiday season! I will reach out again in 2018!
