May 2019

Dear Duncan Creek Parents,

The 2018-2019 school year is rapidly coming to a close. It is hard to believe that 180 school days have passed, and I am completing my sixth year at Duncan Creek. I am grateful and blessed to work each day with such amazing students, staff, and parents.

On the last day of school, students in grades K-4 were able to “step up” to the next grade level and meet their teachers for the 2019-2020 school year. This was a wonderful experience. The students are already excited for the next school year and will enjoy the summer already familiar with their new teacher and classmates. A brochure containing grade level information and the name of your child’s teacher for 2019-20 was placed in each student’s progress report envelope.

We have some very special staff members retiring this year. We are greatly going to miss Mrs. Marla Newman, Mrs. Tracy Lunsford, and Mrs. Jo Conrad. From our custodial staff, we will miss Mr. Genaro Fernmandez. We wish them the very best as they begin this new and exciting phase in life.

Field Days were held over the last month. I know the students had a wonderful time. A special thanks goes to Ms. Alkire and Ms. Basco for their countless hours of preparation for these exciting days. The help of all the volunteers was certainly also invaluable.

Being the principal of Duncan Creek is an honor and privilege. This is an amazing school with a wonderful faculty and staff. However, little can be accomplished without the support of you, the parents. Keep on doing what you’ve been doing as Duncan Creek continues on the path for greatness.

2. Bring or send any updated residency or contact information to the DCES front office before the first day of school.

3. Complete “Transportation Parent Authorization” form for each enrolled student. Forms will be available on DCES website, front office, and Open House .

Open House will be on August 1, 2019 between 8:30 am—11:00 am

Math Enrichment Specials:

Our Math Enrichment Special focused heavily on numerical thinking and problem solving. While some students still used the Engineering Design Process (EDP) for some of our math challenges, we directly supported the math concepts taught in the classroom. We incorporated 3 Act Task challenges, brainstorming, math games, and problem solving with manipulatives to increase student understanding of math concepts.

All students had the opportunity to Code during Math Enrichment Special this year. Some also coded in the Duncan Creek Coding Club. Many students have expressed an interest in joining this club. If we are able to offer Coding Club again next year, we will post information and have applications available in August.

We are already looking forward to another great year in Math Enrichment Specials.

Summer Reading:

Each summer we encourage students to participate in the Duncan Creek Summer Reading Program. It is a great way to keep reading skills strong while students are away from school. Use the link to learn about how to have your student participate!
