A Message from the Administrative Team

Hi WJHS Families,

We are very excited for the ADL Walk Against Hate this Sunday!

Our goal is to work towards being a community free of hate. In fact, your child will soon learn more about how they can get involved in this effort through our No Place for Hate team that will soon be kicking off.

This Sunday, October 10 is the date of this year's annual Walk Against Hate, and we will be hosting an informal in-person walk starting and ending at Highcrest Middle School at 9:00 AM that day. We will plan to walk about 2 miles around Wilmette, and we will have signs and snacks to enjoy our time as a team!

To participate, please register as a part of our team (Wilmette 5-8 Walk Against Hate) at:

https://www.walkagainsthate.org/Chicago/58walkagainsthate. No donation is needed to participate.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Kate, Jeff and Eric

Tech Tidbit

Have you heard about the crate challenge or the school bathroom ‘Devious Lick’ challenge on TikTok? These challenges can be harmful to your child and others. They are also starting to lead to criminal behaviors.

With guidance, TikTok can be a great way to provide a creative outlet for your child. Having conversations with children using Social Media helps them to safely, responsibly, and appropriately use Apps, like TikTok. There are parental controls that can be set to help your child navigate TikTok. Use this Parents’ Ultimate Guide to TikTok from Common Sense Media to help you better understand TikTok to help support your child to use TikTok.

New Trier High School Level Placement Test

New Trier High School will be administering a placement test for WJHS 8th grade students on Saturday, November 13. Further details regarding the test will be mailed out by New Trier in early October. For the most up to date information, we suggest bookmarking the New Trier Incoming Freshman Page.

SHIELD Illinois Portal

Free COVID-19 testing through SHIELD Illinois continues to be available to all students and staff. Weekly testing is strongly encouraged regardless of vaccination status, but particularly for those who are unvaccinated. Thank you to our families who have registered and are participating weekly in this testing program.

Participating families received an email yesterday with instructions on setting up your password-protected SHIELD Portal account, which gives you direct access to your child’s results and the ability to print these results for proof of a negative test.

If you have not registered your child, please take a minute to do so by signing into the Parent PowerSchool Portal, choosing “Forms” on the left side, selecting “COVID Testing Consent” and completing the registration form for each child. Your child will be eligible to participate in SHIELD testing seven days after completing registration.

SHIELD testing is offered weekly on Tuesdays (3:30-6:30 pm), Thursdays (3:30-6:30 pm) and Saturdays (8-11 am) at WJHS. Click here for more information on free SHIELD testing.
