RMS Wildcat Weekly
April 24, 2020 Information for our Families
Happy Friday!
Greetings Wildcat Families,
I hope you are all staying safe and healthy. I was surprised today when I realized that we have now been away from campus for 6 weeks and that we only have a little over 5 weeks before the end of the school year. It has been all-consuming for all of us to make this shift to social distancing and virtual learning, and I am constantly aware that we are all in very different circumstances as we strive to cope with a global pandemic and all its consequences. I continue to be inspired by the efforts of our community to come together with solutions and to support one another.
I know that many of our families are struggling with all kinds of needs, so please know that we are here for you and want to help in any way we can. As I try to manage distance learning with my own sons, I sometimes feel overwhelmed and guilty when I realize that they are not focused or not completing their work. So many of us are balancing working from home or outside of the home, and trying to coordinate learning schedules with students are who sometimes not that excited to log in and be productive is definitely challenging. On top of that, many of our families are facing unemployment, insecure housing and food, and illness. As Roosevelt staff have been collaborating and adjusting to virtual school, I have shared these reminders with them frequently, and I think they are important and helpful for all of us. I remind myself of them daily:
Everything we’re facing is unprecedented.
We must manage our expectations and give ourselves and each other grace.
Self-care and managing your stress are key. You can’t help others unless you take care of yourself.
Connections with our students and with each other are paramount!
Please continue to reach out to our administration, teachers, and counselors for support! We have contact information and resources available on our website. Remember that you and your student can set up an appointment in office hours, email for support, and ask all the questions you need. We are here to connect to our Wildcats and each other, and we will get through this together! Take care of yourselves!
Sincerely,
Heather Golly

Live Conferencing Update:
Teachers may decide to host live conferences on Google Meet/Zoom with their classes to check-in, provide instructions and support for the week’s assignments, and connect with their classes.
Participating teachers who host live conferences will hold a morning and afternoon session on their assigned subject day. Both sessions will be similar, so students may choose to attend one or both of the sessions. See the SCHEDULE HERE on page 2 of our Norms and Schedule document.
The morning and afternoon sessions are open to students from all periods.
Sessions may be extended or shortened depending on the needs of students in session.
Participating teachers will post a link and instructions for joining live conferences in their Google Classrooms.
Students are expected to follow the behavior guidelines detailed in our Roosevelt Live Distancing Norms for any live conferences.

REMINDER: Any student or family needing support can request to speak with a school counselor by visiting bit.do/rmscheckin (all lowercase). Encourage your student to fill this out even if they are concerned about a friend or family member. If a student does not want to be identified, they can still anonymously report via the PSST link on the RMS website, VUSD website or at THIS LINK. We’ve been updating our counseling website with resources and information! Check it out at bit.do/rooseveltcounseling (all lowercase).

Attention all 6th and 7th grade families: We are beginning the process to have students select their Essential (elective) classes for next year! If a student wants to take AVID, ASB, Yearbook, or Broadcasting we will be sharing all the applications on Monday afteroon in the Google Hub.
Attention all 8th grade families: UPDATE! For students going to MVHS, you should see the correct “Next School” in Aeries, but don’t select your classes until you hear from the MVHS counselors. They should reach out soon. For those families waiting on intra/inter-district applications to be processed… we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Please CLICK HERE for our very detailed, updated announcement with unique situations listed. Please refer to our High School Registration Google Folder for all your HS registration needs. General News
PE Lockers & Items Inside: This is one of the questions we are getting the most. Currently, the County of San Diego Public Health Order does not consider access to student items in PE Lockers part of the "critical" aspect of schools. The VUSD is aware of PE Locker item concerns, and our families are not the only ones asking. Stay tuned!
ASES
Roosevelt Middle School offers an After School Education and Safety (ASES) Grant Program, to students grades 6th-8th. This is a cost-free grant program, based on student attendance, providing homework assistance, tutorials, and enrichment activities for your child. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic applications for the 2020-21 school year will be online. Any students who completed a paper application before the school closures are encouraged to re-apply. The application can be found online at the school's website. Applications will be due May 11, 2020. Any applications received after May 11th will automatically be placed on the waiting list and families will be called if/when there is an opening. Students who are currently in the program are not guaranteed acceptance for the next year and need to re-apply. To apply for 2020-2021 ASES click here
Students may still be receiving overdue notices from our automated library system. Please know that students will not accrue fines while school is not in session. Information about when and how to return library books, textbooks, and Chromebooks will be coming soon. If you have any questions, please email Deanna Bennet at deannawestphal@vistausd.org or call 760-472-3375.
Yearbook is complete and looks amazing! Our yearbook was completed in early March and already sent for printing. Families can still purchase the yearbook online:
Purchase directly through our publisher at www.jostens.com. Make sure to enter our school information in the prompt and select "yearbook". Price: $50
As of right now, it is not clear how yearbook distribution would take place; however, families will certainly receive a copy if they make a purchase.
This year, there are only a limited amount of yearbooks for sale. As of April 17, there are only about 100 yearbooks remaining for purchase.
Thank you for supporting our award-winning yearbook program and the amazing staff who have worked tirelessly to complete this year's book. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact the Yearbook Advisor Mr. Daniel Guerzon at DanielGuerzon@vistausd.org.
7th Grade "Family Life/Sex Ed": At this point it looks like the state of California will postpone compliance with the state-mandated Family Life/Sex Ed curriculum for this year. We anticipate picking it up as part of 8th Grade Science.
