Staff Recognition for January

Teacher of the Month - Rebecca Portillo

Our Teacher of the Month is Rebecca Portillo. this is her 6th year teaching at BBE and her 11th year of teaching. She has been married for 16 wonderful years, and she has a son in 7th grade and a daughter in 9th grade. I love Magnolia ISD! This District has provided the academics and extracurricular activities that a large school district has but with a small home town feel. She has always said that the best part of teaching for Magnolia is "the parents!"

This year, she took on the challenge of being the 1st-grade virtual teacher. She is a champion for taking on virtual learning. One of the teaching strategies that she has used to connect with her student online is Whole Brain Teaching (WBT). WBT teaching has allowed her to quickly deliver the basic recall type information that her students need to learn and move them into using critical thinking skills. When my students log on with Zoom every day, they are eager and excited to learn about the day's activities and lessons. This 3rd nine weeks, Rebecca is serving as the Eastside 1st-grade teacher for online learning. In addition to her BBE students, she teaches students from Ellisor, Smith, and Parkway.

Mrs. Portillo is a rockstar, and we love you!

Staff of the Month - Timothy Pickrell

Our staff member for the month of January is Timothy Pickrel. The kids at school call her "Coach P." Coach P is a certified teacher and has been in education for 8 years. He has worked in various roles, whether it being in public school or after-school programs. He has been married for ten years. Together, they have 3 wonderful kids, two boys, ages 8 and 1, and a 3-year old girl. When asked about what he liked about BBE, he said, "It is an honor to teach and grow relationships with the students every day. Being able to see the students grow every day makes it easy to teach PE, especially when they are so eager to learn and have fun every day."

Congrats to Coach P! You are such an amazing PE teacher and a fantastic role model for our students!
