Let's Build!
Week of September 26-30, 2022

Updates for the Week
We hope you've enjoyed this lovely weekend. Here are some updates for the week of September 26-30. You can find full details and updates from your child’s teacher by clicking on their class link below.
As a reminder, tomorrow, Monday, September 26 is a teacher workday. There is no school for students. Please note that our office will be closed for staff to attend professional development activities. School will resume on Tuesday.
Wednesday, September 28 is school picture day. All students will have their pictures made for the school yearbook. If you’d like to order a package, please return the order form and payment to school by Wednesday morning. You can also order online from Strawbridge Studios. See our website for full details. https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1659681
On Wednesday, your child will receive a progress report for the first quarter. Please review this report, talk with your child about what they are learning, return the signed report to school, and reach out to your teacher with questions. This report may be accompanied with supplemental parent reports about beginning of the year assessments.
This week, we are excited to begin field trips. Thank you for sending in field trip payments. If you haven’t sent in your child’s payment, please remember that $10 is due by Monday, October 4th. On Tuesday, our 5th graders travel to the Soil and Water center. On Wednesday, our 2nd and 3rd graders will travel to the JAWCC for the “Diggery Dino '' performance. Please make sure signed field trip forms are returned to school in advance of the trip.
Finally, our Wilkesboro PTO has school shirts, sweatshirts, and more available for sale for a limited time at an online store. See below for more information. The sale lasts through October 4. Thanks for your support and encouragement during this busy month of September. Have a great evening!
Order WES Gear through October 4!
We Love Field Trips
Field trips are a special part of school, and we are excited for students to enjoy these learning experiences again. Field trips allow students to experience new environments, learn in unique places, apply skills learned in the classroom, and connect with the real world around us. Our teachers have planned 4 to 5 field trips for each grade level.
All students are included in field trips. We calculate the cost of field trips to include gas and driver pay for bus transportation and admission tickets. Costs are calculated based on every student participating. All students will ride on our bus transportation to field trips, and we will also provide regular free lunch (or snack) for students through our cafeteria. We invite parent chaperones to attend many field trips (separate cost for parents) but not all. Some trips, like those to the JAWCC, are required by Wilkes County Schools. Click here for full details about field trips for the 2022-2023 school year! If you'd like to donate to help make field trips affordable for all, please contact our office at 336-838-4261.
Lunch Menu Click here for this week's lunch menu for K-5. Click here for full menus for all WCS. K-5th graders will have ice cream on Friday. Cost is $1. You can pay online here using your child's ID number (see bookbag tag). | Build Language! This year, we are working to build reading comprehension skills of all students through speaking and listening. Our routine for the next few weeks is DESCRIBING and EXPLAINING. We are focusing on the skills of naming attributes and using descriptive words like adjectives and adverbs when speaking and listening. These oral language skills are essential for building language and reading comprehension skills in kids of all ages. | Volunteers Needed! We are currently seeking future volunteers to serve as chaperones on field trips throughout the year. If you would like to help with a field trip with your child, please see the volunteer form below for how to sign up to be a volunteer at WES. Signing up lasts for 2 years, but must be completed every 2 years. |

We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
