Abstract
Milk to Plastic
For my science fair project I wanted to turn milk into plastic, I also wanted to experiment with different grades of milk to see if the ending result was different with each one. My hypothesis was that there would be no difference. I first heated one cup of milk to a steaming point. I then poured the milk into a bowl. Then I mixed four teaspoons of vinegar into the milk and stirred for one minute. Next, I poured my mixture into a strainer and took out all the casein (the product left after the chemical reaction.) Afterward, I shaped the casein into a cube. Lastly, I left the casein out to harden and dry. I repeated this process for a total of four times with different grades of milk (whole, 2%, 1%, fat-free). I found that the more fat content in the milk the better the plastic, in fact, anything under 2% cannot be shaped and only hardens into a lump. I also observed that the drying time was longer for the casein from milk with more fat content. I concluded that my hypothesis was incorrect and that there is a difference in the results of each grade of milk. In future tests, I would like to experiment with different plant based milk to see what kind of results I get as in comparison to animal based milk. I would also like to see if there is a way to stabilize the material so that it can be used in place of certain non-biodegradable plastic products. This would provide an organic option that would aid in protecting the environment.
