Hello SHARK! Families, October 13, 2023
It was absolutely amazing to see so many of you at Open House last week! I just feel like one big family, opening the doors to so many familiar faces. Family is important to me, as I’m sure it is to you too. I have a husband of 25 years who I met at Tower St. School in Kindergarten. I also have four children, two in college and two at Westerly High School. I also have two very special dogs!
Finding time to be together as a family is always a challenge. When my kids were little, they were only allowed two twenty minute blocks of video games. One of my sons always lumped his time together for one forty minute block and my other son used one block right after school and the other 20 minute time block right after dinner. If they fussed about getting off their devise then I subtracted 10 minutes the next day. They learned quickly that when the timer went off, they really had to be done. We also liked to play kickball in the yard or play Uno or Parcheesi at the kitchen table.
As the children entered the hectic world of sports, we found ourselves in the car more often. We often listened to music together. If one of the kids was singing, that meant they were happy and we weren’t allowed to tell them to stop. The rule applied to me too! Car rides were a great opportunity to practice the value of coins, add coins together or practice math facts. This was before they were in high school and started to wear ear buds in the car to tune me out!
Thank you for sharing your children with us. We love that they are apart of our SSS family. We love that you partner with us in setting limits, getting outside, and practicing math!
Love,

National Family History Month: How to Discover Your Family History
October is National Family History Month. This is a great opportunity to talk about family history and make sure your family story is remembered for decades (and centuries) to come.
On Tuesday the teachers will be sending home a paper bag with each child. Stapled to the bag is a note that says the following:
October - Family History Month
This is our first activity of our “THIS IS US” Celebration. Please bring in one object that represents your family history/culture. For example, a picture, recipe, family tree or a souvenir from where your family is from.
**Please return the paper bag with your name on it by Monday, October 23rd
Enjoy the activity, I’m sure it will provoke some fun discussions!
