Bucket Filler
We are off to a great start!! Counselors have been busy visiting classrooms for our first lessons of the school year. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade get an introduction to bucket filling. We review this concept with all of the other grades. Everyone carries an invisible bucket, usually in our hearts. We keep all of our good thoughts and happy feelings in our buckets. We fill buckets when we are kind to others. When you help others feel good, your bucket gets filled up too. We feel good when we help others feel good!! Students are reminded and challenged to fill as many buckets as they can each day. Have your student teach you about bucket filling and become a bucket filling family today and every day!!
Attendance Matters
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help catch children up.
We have been celebrating Perfect Attendance with our attendance flags. When a class has 15 days of Perfect Attendance a special reader will visit the room for a Read Aloud. It is important that students arrive on time and stay all day :)
You may see classes with Perfect Attendance being featured on our Duello Twitter page!
The New Report Card
The English Language Arts and Mathematics Curriculum have both been recently revised which caused the need for the district report card to be revised in these areas to match the revised curriculum. The new report card uses learning scales so that teachers are better able to communicate with parents about a child's progress in a particular area. The learning scales also provide parents with more detailed information about why a child was assigned a particular mark (1, 2, 3 or 4). In addition, the learning scales help make sure all teachers are assessing student achievement and growth the same way.
Last year, Duello, Lakeview, and Heritage Primary 1st Grade all piloted the revised report card. During this year, the district decided to role the revisions out district wide. The 3 pilot schools then led all Wentzville K-5 Teachers through professional development about the upcoming changes for 2016-2017. During May of 2016, another round of revisions based off of teacher, parent and administrator feedback were made.

A Note from Our Reading Coach & Interventionists
The start of the year is such an exciting time of year for students, parents, and teachers. As the teachers have been building the students reading and writing life at school, we wanted to share with you some tips on how you can develop your child’s love for reading and writing at home. Quick tips for parents:
* Create a special time and place in your home for your family to enjoy reading. Designating a quiet and screen-free time for reading will show your child that it is important to get lost in a book without distractions. As your child’s first teacher, model good reading habits by making time to read for enjoyment too!
* Re-read favorite books and poems in many ways. Take turns reading together or take turns reading each page of a story. Have your child read to a family member, pet, or stuffed animal.
* When your child makes a mistake in their reading, gently guide them through reading strategies to solve the word. If sounding out the word isn’t working…cover up the word and ask your child what would sound right and make sense in that part of the sentence.

A note from Nurse Corona
Welcome back! Hopefully everybody has settled into the school routine. We have had a decent combination of illness and seasonal allergies already. If your child has allergies, please be sure you have started giving allergy medication to help keep symptoms to a minimum. In order to help keep your child well, please discuss the importance of frequent, good hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes with an arm, eating a well-balanced diet, drinking water, and getting plenty of sleep. Please remember that I can only administer medication, including over the counter medication, with authorization from a doctor. Also, children should never bring medication to school in their backpacks.
We have experienced a large number of toileting accidents this year. This is expected at the beginning of the year as the students are not in the habit of asking someone if they can go to the bathroom. Some students are also nervous about using the restroom at school. Please discuss with your child the importance of telling his/her teacher if they need to use the restroom and trying to go every time the class takes a bathroom break. Constipation is common in children. If you administer laxatives or stool softeners please let your child’s teacher know so they will allow them to use the bathroom as many times as needed. With that said, accidents happen. Please encourage your child to tell an adult as soon as that happens. It is also very helpful to keep a full change of clothes in your child’s backpack.
Please always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding your child.
