2nd Grade News
with Ms. Przedpelski
Another great week back in 2nd grade!
We have had a very productive week in 2nd grade together! Your students have been working very hard and have been very excited to be back with their classmates after the long Thanksgiving holiday. I was very pleased with how well my students focused and tried their best during our MAP testing sessions. I hope to see some great improvements when we receive these scores. I hope you all had a wonderful time with your families over the break. I cannot believe we only have a few more weeks until our Winter vacation!
Please read through our newsletter for some important news and reminders. There is a lot to read this week - please make sure you read it all! As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Ms. Przedpelski

4. Homework Packet coming home:
We have had a bit of a break from homework the past week due to our Science Fair Projects being due. Your child will be bringing home their Homework Packet today! We are back to our regular schedule, this is due on Friday, December 11th.
5. Reading Logs/Reflections:
I gave students an extra 4 days to finish writing their November reflections. Your students did an awesome job this month, especially on their summaries. I am seeing much more detail and nicely formed sentences. This makes me one very proud teacher :)
We will NOT have Reading Logs/Reflections for the month of December because we will not be in school for the entire month. However.... I still expect your students to be reading at home! They should work on filling out their Six Flags Read to Succeed log (more info below).
6. AR Quizzes:
Please be reminded... AR quizzes will only be taken during school. I know in the past, students could take quizzes at home. This year, students will only be allowed to take quizzes during the school day. We have the iPads twice a week for your students to test!
Even though we do not have reflections this month - your students should still take their AR quizzes when they finish their books!!
7. AR Goals:
If your child reads, takes an AR quiz, and scores a passing grade on TWO AR quizzes by the end of December, they will receive a dress down day at the beginning of the following month for reaching their AR goal :)
Our AR Goal winners for November are: Madeline, Mithra, Gitanjali, Zulal, Abhinav, Krish, and Rana. These students took and passed their AR quizzes this month - these students have earned a dress down day on Tuesday, December 8th
8. Media Center:
We usually visit the media center as a class every Monday! Please make sure your child is returning their books when they have finished reading them to avoid library fines!

Six Flags - Read to Succeed!
Today your child will bringing home their Six Flag's Read to Succeed information! It is a fun incentive to get kids to read, and I know that many of our 2nd graders will be doing some recreational reading over their Holiday Break.
Students need to record and log their reading over the next few months. If they submit a log with 6 hours of reading on it by Wednesday, February 24, 2016, they will receive one free ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia! This is optional, but it is also a GREAT way to get your 2nd grader excited about reading at home if they aren't excited to do so right now :)
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to participate
- Review the reading log provided by your child's language arts teacher. Your child should use this sheet to record what and how long he/she reads
- Your child must complete 6 hours (360 minutes) of recreational reading
- Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to verify that the 6 hours of reading has been completed
- Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books (digital or hard copy). Reading for homework or a class assignment does NOT count!
- Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult - you can read to your child, or your child can read to you.
- Remind your child to return the reading log to his/her language arts teacher byWednesday, February 24, 2016. Your child's teacher will submit your child's information and minutes read.
- Late entries will NOT be accepted
Happy reading! Let me know if you have any questions!
Warm gloves and socks charity drive
It is an awful truth that many people, even in our community, are victims of violence. Often times these people seek help from local organizations.
Family Haven, an organization in Forsyth County, offers safe shelter and needed items, for free to those in need. We can help them help others, by donating.
Cold winter weather is quickly approaching. Many people are in need of warm gloves and socks.
Make a difference in someone’s life.
Be kind and generous and bring in one or more pair of gloves and/or socks.
Together we can help.
Your donations can be dropped off at the front office or your child can give them to his/her homeroom teacher.
We will accept donations until December 16th.
WOW! 2nd grade is AWESOME!

Reading/Language Arts:
This week we will be reading a story about Anansi the spider. This is a folk tale. We will discuss compound words, and we will practice comparing and contrasting using different stories. We will also focus again on the complete writing process. We are becoming much stronger writers!
Ms. P's Math Class:
Ms. P's class has been working hard on multiplication and division. We have been working on our study guide all week, this is coming home today. We will take our Ch.5 assessment on Monday, December 7th. Then we will begin Ch.6!
Ms. Minor's Math Class:
This week Ms. Minor's math class will be beginning division! We are very excited to take the knowledge we have learned in multiplication and use it in division practice. The students will be required to solve division problems and represent them in pictures as well. Keep practicing math facts at home! :)
Science:
We are finishing up our study of weather. Students will review as a whole group, complete a study guide that will come home on Wednesday night, and test on Friday, December 11th.
Social Studies:
We will now be moving back to Ch.2: Working to meet our needs in our My World Curriculum. We will spend quite a bit of time on this chapter! We will be covering all types of skills and concepts that answer the question how do people get what they need?
