This Week at SOTA
NKU School of the Arts - Feb. 5, 2020
Frederic Chiu Bringing the (Classical) Smackdown
Get ready to rumble as world-renowned pianist Frederic Chiu brings an epic classical piano showdown of Prokofiev versus Debussy to NKU SOTA. The concert will take place this Friday, Feb. 7, 2020 at 7 p.m. at Greaves Concert Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
Inspired by reality talent shows like “American Idol,” “Classical Smackdown” is a “tongue-in-cheek wrestling match” between contrasting composers with the audience voting for their favorite composer during the concert. The format is built so that any novice or professional can come and have an opinion. The program for Prokofiev-Debussy is arranged in four “rounds” of pieces specifically to provide an opportunity to compare and contrast.
A Closer Look at the Hoosier Hardwood Photo Project
In 2013 photographers Chris Smith & Michael E. Keating began a journey to document Indiana’s historic gyms. Although basketball was not born in Indiana, the state adopted the game as its own – nine of the top ten largest high school gyms in the United States are located in Indiana. In 1954, the year tiny Milan won the state championship, more than 700 schools participated in the one class state tournament – a story that would later help to inspire the Hollywood film Hoosiers. As of January 2020 Smith & Keating have travelled more than 50,000 miles, shot more than 400,000 digital frames, visited more than 300 gyms and witnessed countless hours of basketball. One hundred photos from the project are on permanent display at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and in 2016 the project was featured in the New York Times and was one of the Indiana Historical Society’s Bicentennial Exhibits.
In July 2020 Indiana University Press will publish a book of photographs & essays from the project entitled “Chasing Indiana’s Game.”
“Chasing Indiana’s Game: The Hoosier Hardwood Project” will be up through Feb. 21 in the Third Floor Gallery.
