Southwestern's Throwback Thursday
2012: "Government Mock Trial: Friday, December 9, the Senior Government Class enacts a fake trial in order to help them better understand court procedures. In the case, Aaron Zell is charged with first degree murder of Mr. Nigh. After an unusually short deliberation, the jury reached a verdict, but with persuasion from Mr. Nigh, the jury decided to go over the evidence one last time. After another entire day of re-evaluating the evidence against the defendant, Jury Foreman Jacob Hebbe declared Aaron Zell not guilty."

The Remembrance Table
As students entered the SWHS cafeteria on Veterans Day, they noticed a small table in a place of honor. It was set for one. The table was to honor those who are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action. We remember them.
Description of The Table
- The table set for one is small - symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his oppressors. The table is round to represent the everlasting concern the survivors have for the missing. Remember!
- The tablecloth is white - symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country’s call to arms. Remember!
- The single red rose displayed in a vase symbolizes the blood that service members have shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of the United States of America. The rose also reminds us of the families and friends who keep the faith while awaiting the return of the missing service members. Remember!
- The red ribbon tied prominently on the vase represents our service members’ love of country, which inspired them to serve. It is also reminiscent of the red ribbon worn upon the chests of thousands who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing. Remember!
- The candle is lit - symbolizing the upward reach of our service members’ unconquerable spirits. It also demonstrates a light of hope that lives in our hearts to illuminate the missing’s way home. Remember!
- A slice of lemon is on the bread plate to remind us of the bitter fate of the missing. Remember!
- There is salt upon the bread plate. It is symbolic of the tears shed by the waiting families. Remember!
- The glass is inverted to represent the fact that the missing and fallen cannot celebrate with us today. Remember!
- The Bible represents the spiritual strength and faith to sustain the lost. Remember!
- The chair is empty to remind us of the absence of the missing and fallen. Remember!
- All of you who served with them and called them comrades, who depended upon their might and aid, and relied upon them, surely, they have not forsaken you. Remember!

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that mails high-quality books to children from birth until their 5th birthday regardless of their family’s income. “The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school,” states the National Commission on Reading.
Financial Donations made through the Blue River Community Foundation have allowed this wonderful program to be offered in our community! Each month, registered children who live in Southwestern’s school district will receive an age appropriate book in the mail, addressed to them, at no cost to the family. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. to make many wonderful books in the program available in braille and audio format for children who are blind or visually impaired in order for all children to benefit from these wonderful books.
