A Look at Our Week
Last week, your children were abuzz with questions about our media center honeybees! After writing down everything that they already knew about honeybees, they visited Claxton's hive and came back with dozens more questions to answer. I love 5 year olds' natural curiosity! We have begun researching the answers to those questions using books, and National Geographic videos and this week we will be writing down that information to share with you all at home. Your children will also be "movie" stars when they record their final work on the green screen!
In Math we will continue to work on the concept of "counting on" during our math games and activities this week. This is a good introduction to addition, which we will start to work on soon. At home, it's fun to pose problems with your child such as, "If there are 10 steps up to your bedroom, and you have already walked up 8 of them, how many more steps until you reach the top?" Vary the level of difficulty depending on your child's comfort level.
When my children were in Kindergarten, I discovered a great website called "bedtimemath.com". Every night before bed, before reading a bedtime story, I would use one of their math problems to expand their thinking. It is a great resource for stretching their mathematical understanding, and applying their skills. I hope that you find this site as useful as I have done over the years. I also urge you to play board games with your child. It is interesting to observe whether they still have to count the dots on the die, or whether they automatically know what "5 dots" looks like, for instance.
Last week in Fundations we learned three new consonants: l - lamp-/l/, h-hat-/h/, and k-kite-/k/. This week we will be adding v-van-/v/ and w-wind/w/. We are so close to having learnt all the sounds, letters and lower case handwriting formations! We are also moving onto identifying the last sound in words (previously we have focused on beginning sounds), another fun game for the car!
We have a few holiday errands this week: We are making decorations for Christmas trees for hospice patients, and creating wooden Christmas tree scenes for our classroom. Before we embark on our field trip at the end of the week, we will be reading about winter holiday celebrations in different European countries. I am excited to make Gingerbread cookies with them after reading about German traditions, and am still wracking my brain as to how I can sneak treats into their shoes on the French "Pere Noel" day! Oh, it's so fun to be a Kindergarten teacher!!
