It was named after the dwarf planet, Ceres. It was discovered in 1803 by Jön Jakob Berzelius and Wilhelm Hisinger. There is almost no Cerium in the atmosphere. Cerium is a grey metal that is malleable and one of the most reactive of the rare-earth metals. It can decompose slowly in cold water , and very rapidly in hot water.
