The ban of the full face veil
France's ban
France
A new law has come into force in France that makes it an offence for women to conceal their faces with a veil in public. . some people agree with this new law and some disagree with it - there are mixed views.
The Consequence
Women in face veils risk a €150 (£132) fine or citizenship lessons. Police cannot forcibly remove face coverings in the street but can order women to a police station to check their identity.
The Ban
As of 11 April 2011, it is illegal to wear a face-covering veil or other mask in public places such as the street, shops, parks, public transportation
Protesting
Quite often, Muslims take to the streets of Paris in protest at new French law banning the wearing of niqabs and burqas in public.
Niqāb
The difference between a niqab and a burqa
It can be difficult to distinguish the difference between one type of veil and another. The terms niqab and burqa are often incorrectly used; a niqab covers the face while a burqa covers the whole body from the top of the head to the ground.
