CHS Update

Settling Into Our New Normal
As I'm sure many of you heard, Governor Whitmer announced on Friday that the likelihood of students returning to school this year is very low. While I have very little to share that is concrete, I do know that the Michigan Department of Education is working to plan for multiple scenarios and that the Governor has been committed to seniors graduating. Regardless, I know that our students, staff, and parents have so many questions about what that potential means for CHS students. Please know that the CHS team is working to make sure that plenty of learning opportunities exist for our students, social-emotional supports are provided, and that we find ways to celebrate the time-honored traditions of our seniors.
I know that each of our students (and all of us actually) are in different places emotionally with this closure and hope that we all remember to be kind to each other and to ourselves. Nothing about the new normal is normal and it's especially easy to forget when some students are legally adults that they are very much so processing this in ways that are not always mature. This is normal. Every student has a right to be sad, mad, glad (or insert emotion here) and I know that we would expect those emotions to change sometimes daily and sometimes hourly.
I'm not sharing things with you that you don't already know, but what I hope you hear is that I understand the magnitude of how things have changed and I am here with you making adjustments in my own house, to my own expectations, and to my expectations for what this school year looks like. I am reminded in times like these of just how grateful I am to be the Principal of Carlson High School - from the kind and thoughtful parent emails and the amazing chats with students to the response from my staff and the new ways I'm able to engage with them. We will continue to bring together our community as we have always done, to support our students, and regardless of the outcome of any announcements from the Governor's office or implications that COVID-19 brings about, we, together, will continue to make decisions that support not only students' reality today, but their future!
Be kind, be safe, and be well!

Food Service Information
Food distribution will continue to take place from 1:00-3:00 in the Carlson/Shumate bus loop on Tuesdays and Fridays. This is to ensure we are maintaining safety and social distancing protocols from the state and federal government. This breakfast and lunch service is available to ALL Gibraltar students. If you are taking part, we would love to wave hi to you in our drive-thru pickup, but definitely want you to the stay in your car.

Scheduling
Scheduling for the 20-21 school year is still continuing until 4/1/2020. Please encourage your child to complete this important process as this is how we know what students want. We don't want to choose for them. :)
I'm putting a video from our counselors below this to help our students with online scheduling. Our 10th and 11th grade students used online scheduling last year and the process is the exact same. Please don't hesitate to reach out to counselors with any questions.

Students who are interested in taking vocational, direct college, dual enrollment, or online courses as a part of their CHS day next year, need to complete this form.
We are excited to be offering Cybersecurity for our students as a CTE program. Students who participate in this program will leave with certificates allowing them entry-level jobs in the industry as well as a huge start in attaining an Associates or Bachelors degree in the Cybersecurity field.
