JANUARY 2ND CHANGE IN SCHOOL CALENDAR
At the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 19, 2022, the Harrison Township Board of Education voted to make a change to the current school calendar. With this change, all students and staff will be OFF on Monday January 2, 2023 and there WILL be school on Friday, May 26, 2023. As you are aware, the school calendar is developed and communicated each year in April or May, together with the Clearview School District, with the intention of providing as much consistency as possible for our families. Changes to the school calendar are avoided wherever possible as we are aware that families make plans based on the dates that are communicated, however, sometimes changes are made in overall best interest of the school community.
I received notification from members of the staff in the Harrison Township School District on December 19th that stated intention to exercise the legal right under NJSA 18A:25-3, which establishes that teaching staff members may choose not to work on statutory holidays without loss of pay. Monday, January 2, 2023 is considered the statuary holiday for New Years Day. Out of respect for the statuary holiday, the BOE chose to make an amendment to the calendar to avoid any issue with classroom coverage because of the potential absence of staff members who may choose to exercise this legal right on January 2, 2023.
Once again, we understand and apologize for the inconvenience that this last minute change may cause our families and we thank you in advance for your understanding of the reason for it at this time.
Dr. Missy Quinn Peretti, Superintendent of Schools
