Safety First! Our children are precious.
Please remember safety first for both dropoff and pickup at West Lawn. Please pull forward along the sidewalk on the West end of the parking lot for drop off and pick up. This makes it very safe for your child to walk along the sidewalk and not have to dart across traffic. It is preferred you not drop your students off along College Street but if you do they must use the crosswalk. That is the expectation for students and parents. If I had a magic wand I would definitely change our parking lot :)

Spring Panorama Survey
We will once again be asking our students to take the Panorama perceptual survey. We take Panorama in the fall and again in the spring. West Lawn students will take the survey beginning March 13th. Here is some communication from our district on Panorama:
Dear GIPS Families,
We wanted to share a helpful reminder that your student will be invited to participate in the GIPS Culture/Climate survey. The survey will be administered to students March 13 - 24.
This survey, Panorama, is a platform GIPS uses to monitor school safety, education and engagement. We utilize the platform to ask your student high-level questions about school safety and their overall school experience.
Here are a few additional details:
Panorama is an optional survey.
If you have already optioned your student out of the survey your student will not receive the survey link.
A resource of information, FAQs, sample reports, and last year’s reporting may be found on the district website, HERE.
Aggregate data from all ‘22-’23 panorama installments (students, families, staff) will be shared with the GIPS Board of Education in June of 2023 after all survey opportunities have been completed.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the district office at 308.385.5900 or share a message through Let’s Talk.

Help Your Child Succeed in School -Build the Habit of Good Attendance
Did you know?
- Starting in preschool and kindergarten too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down to help children catch up.
What you can do:
- set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required immunizations
- develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent
- try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
- if you child seems anxious about going to school, talk to the teacher, school counselor, or school social worker. We want to ensure your child feels comfortable and excited about learning.

Reading Buddies on YouTube -A great learning show for Preschool through Grade 3 students
These are short videos (free on YouTube) that are very engaging and fun for kids to watch. Even better they were developed specifically to support a child's reading skills. I watched a few of the episodes with students and they loved them. Here is a link to an episode: https://youtu.be/drCUwtDYBIg And, for further information read below.
The Reading League’s Reading Buddies is an engaging foundational television series, based on the science of reading, that cleverly teaches underlying components of skillful word reading such as phonological awareness, letter names/sounds, and blending sounds to decode words.
The show features a hilarious talking dog named Dusty who, with the help of his best human friend Dott, he’s learning a new trick – how to read! They are joined by a kazoo-talking, robot assistant named Alphabott, and an adorable cast of human Alphabotteers. Together, they form an after-school reading club where Dusty explores letters and their sounds, social-emotional learning, and whatever else sparks his curiosity or desire for snacks! Each episode features a new “Alphabadge” for Dusty to earn, marking the progress of his reading journey. Together, along with the viewers, they are the “Reading Buddies!”

Second Step Child Protection Unit
Dear Family,
Grand Island Public Schools is using the Second Step program in your child’s learning environment. The Second Step program teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
To help our school be even more safe and supportive, we are also going to use the Second Step Child Protection Unit. In these lessons, children will learn three types of skills:
• Personal Safety. Children will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
• Touching Safety. Children will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell a grown-up if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
• Assertiveness. These lessons will also give children a chance to practice asking a grown-up for help, telling a grown-up about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
To keep your child safe and protected, everyone at school needs to be involved. So all our staff will get special training in how to:
• Recognize and report suspected child abuse
• Respond to and support children who have been abused or who are facing other challenges
• Use strategies that promote a safe and supportive climate for learning
If you have any questions about the Child Protection Unit or the Second Step program, please contact me. For more information on our school’s child-protection policies and procedures, you can also talk to the School Counselor or the Principal.
Go online to SecondStep.org and log in with the activation key CPUE FAMI LYGE to get more information about what your child is learning in the Second Step program. Thank you for helping us to make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maggie Mintken, Principal
Mrs. Sarah Grigsby, School Counselor

No school on Friday and lockdown drill
Reminder there is no school on Friday, September 16th
Today we completed our Lockdown Drill. School Resource Officers and city officers helped us complete the drill. Students and staff did a great job!
In the event of an emergency, we would contact you through email and phone. We would ask you not to drive to school so that there would be room for emergency response vehicles, and more instructions would be given in the communication.
We work hard to keep our school safe! Thank you for your support! If you have questions or need anything, please feel free to call the school.
Thanks again,
Dr. Mintken

Your child's teacher will also talk about it several times in class to prepare the students and ensure they understand the importance of this drill.

Our students will continue to do beginning of the year assessments in Dibels and MAPs. Throughout the newsletter you will see West Lawn students at the State Fair. Lastly, below you will find important information to know.
Family Time at West Lawn -Wednesday from 3:45 - 5:00 pm
Come join us for Family Time at West Lawn. We would like each family to do the following: 1. visit your child's classroom; 2. Hear from Dr. Mintken about the West Lawn Expectations: safe, responsible, and respectful; 3. Sign up to join our Parent -Teacher Organization (PTO) and 4. After you have done the first three your child will get a free Sno Cone!!!! All West Lawn students will get a free sno cone courtesy of Ken's Appliance! Additional Sno Cones can be purchased by families. We are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday afternoon.
Drop off and Pick up best practices
Thank you for being safe as you drop off and pick up your children. An important thing to remember is to not stop in the drive through lane. I would encourage you to drive up as far west as possible to drop your children off. Do not stop in the drive-through lane...this causes the traffic to back up. We all want to get to work on time and it is okay if your child walks a few extra steps. Finally, at pick up time do not park in the drive-through lane. This makes it unsafe for our students to use the crosswalk and causes the traffic to back up.

A Magical School Year!
A Note From the Principal
Greetings West Lawn Families,
Let me start by first introducing myself, I am Dr. Maggie Mintken. I am so excited to join the West Lawn Elementary School community. The previous fifteen years I have served as an administrator at Grand Island Senior High. My husband Jess and I have two children. Roady, an eleventh grader (Grand Island Senior High) and Nelson an eighth grader (Barr Middle School). My children have had a great educational experience in GIPS and I want the same thing for your children. Together we will work to ensure your child(ren) find the magical experience of learning and developing to their fullest potential. My door is always open --please reach out if you would like to volunteer or participate. Your questions and concerns are also very important to me so do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,

Preparing for the School Year
Morning and Bedtime Routine
Start with the morning and bedtime school routines you want to use for the school year. Not sure what your child's beditme should be? According to Web MD school age children need between 10-12 hours of sleep with bedtimes usually being between 7:00-9:00 pm. A commonly used bedtime routine includes bath time, followed by snuggle time on the couch, 30 minutes of story time, then lights out.
Next decide on your morning routine. Consider your family needs. Are you the type that are quick to get ready or the type that needs to ease into the day? Determine what time the morning wakeup should be based on your family.
Once you have set your morning and beditme school routine it's time to start easing in the process. After a summer of sleeping in it can be quite a shock for kids (and parents) to suddenly have to get up before the sun comes out. To make the first week of school easier and less miserable, simply start getting used to your routine in increments. Adjust the times in 15 minute increments leading up to the first day of school.
School lunches
West Lawn Elementary meets the Community Eligible Provision therefore all students will have access to free breakfast and lunch each day. You are not required to complete Free & Reduced School Meals Family Application. However, if you have other children attending middle or high school you will need to complete the application.
