TESTING NEWS
5th Grade News
We traveled to Myrtle Beach for our annual field trip on Wednesday, March 22 and “Beauty and the Beast” at NLHS on March 23. We had such a great time at both!
Please set a good example by reading with your child nightly. You could both read and discuss the same book.
Practice math facts as often as you can, particularly multiplication facts. Over 50% of the EOG is on fractions, and there is a lot of multiplication and division involved with fractions.
Encourage your child to engage in real world reading, math, and problem solving. Your home, the grocery store, your job...these are wonderful places to find real life examples to teach and learn from.
4th Grade News
Fourth grade has had a busy year so far this school year. We are looking forward to our upcoming field trip on April 12 to the Outer Banks. The cost of the field trip is $37.00. Money and field trip forms are due by April 7.
In reading we are finishing up Greek Mythology Units and starting Poetry / Figurative Language Units. Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes each day outside of school.
In math we have been exploring fractions and decimals. During the fourth nine weeks will investigate geometry. Please encourage your child to complete their homework assignments and show their math work.

Read some more, you will see,
Your brain will grow like a tree.
Please read with your child 20 minutes everyday to increase their skills.

2nd Grade News
Second graders are continuing to learn about different genres of reading. Soon we will begin incorporating reading assessment practices to prepare them for 3rd grade.
In math, we will begin 3 digit addition and subtraction.
In Science we will be studying about Life Cycles and will be watching chickens hatch in our classrooms.
Second graders had a great time on their field trip to watch Goldsboro Ballet perform Frozen. We had a picnic lunch at Herman Park and had a great time playing in the park.
We also enjoyed watching NLHS play: Beauty and the Beast. Our students loved it.
1st Grade News
First grade has been fabulous this year. Our students are becoming more and more independent every day. We have celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday and Dr. Seuss’ birthday. A sneaky leprechaun has even visited. First grade has done some traveling also. We have been to Raleigh to see the Disney on Ice show and to the nature center in Greenville where our students got to touch live turtles! We are moving right along with our learning. In reading, our first graders have been learning about digraphs, combinations, diphthongs, and many new sight words. They are able to apply these concepts to help with reading! In first grade, we are also taking our comprehension stories and focusing on the setting, characters, the problem and solution, and the sequence of a story. In math, our students have been adding and subtracting one digit and two digit numbers. We have been really focusing on word problems and how to solve them. At the moment, first grade students have been learning about graphing. Graphing is such a fun unit! Our students love to graph candy!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students have culminated a science unit on properties by designing a Leprechaun trap, compared and contrasted the book, movie, and play of Beauty and the Beast, and celebrated the life of Dr. Seuss by participating in a book study. We will participate in hands on projects involving animal and plant life cycles in the coming weeks.

GUIDANCE
We are currently completing lessons on the Character Education theme of Integrity. The Character Education theme for the month of April will focus on Courage.
MUSIC
This has been a very busy month in Music. The 5th grade chorus just performed their Spring Concert, and the Honors Chorus performed on Saturday, 3/25. In the classroom we are discussing multiple composers, new songs in different languages (including Spanish and French), and different aspects of instrumental performance.
