3D Printing

Criteria A - Inquiring and Analyzing - Sreypich Heng

For this unit, my client (Ms. Guylaine) wants us to design a useful and unique 3D object by using the CAD program and then send it to the school 3D printer to print it. There are many different useful product in these industries nowadays, so I think I will go with jewelry because 3D printing has brought fashion and jewelry onto a whole new level. The technologies are so innovative and creative now, that everything can be so different and interesting in many ways. In this 3D unit, I will become a young entrepreneur and I will have to collaborate with one of my classmate to design and create the a useful 3D product. This jewelry piece will be unique because it's very couture, high fashion and delegate. This is suppose to showcase that jewelry can be made in a different form. After creating the product, we will both have to showcase it to the school. To do this, we will both design a brochure and advertise about our product. Advertising is a very sufficient and effective to sell the product to the school and other students because no one will know about the product my partner and I created unless we do a showcase of it by advertising.

Research Plan

  1. What is the best design to consider when design a bangle?
  2. What color for jewelry is the most trendy at the moment?
  3. How can jewelry elevate a classic and chic outfit?
  4. What program can be used to create the design in 3D format?
  5. What program can be used to create the design?
  6. How long does it take a 3D printer to print a bracelet?
  7. What is the appropriate and suitable size for a normal bracelet?

Primary Source

I went around asking a couple students and a couple fashionable teachers about their jewelry preferences like; what color they like their jewelries to be, size, simple or bold, etc. Most of the responses were they like their jewelry really simple, but interesting and elegant. Also, the most popular response was they prefer their jewelry color to be neutral, white, black or nude.

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing is simply a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. 3D printed object is achieved using addictive processes. In an addictive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created.

How does 3D Printing work?

It all starts with making a virtual design of the object you want to create. This virtual design is made in CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using 3D modeling program or with the use of a 3D scanner. To prepare a digital file for printing, the 3D modeling software “slices” the final model into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers. When the sliced file is uploaded in a 3D printer, the object can be created layer by layer. The 3D printer reads every slide or 2D image and creates the object, blending each layer with hardly any visible sign of the layers, with as a result the three dimensional object.

What can 3D Printing do in the future?

It is predicted by some additive manufacturing advocates that this technological development will change the nature of commerce, because end users will be able to do much of their own manufacturing rather than engaging in trade to buy products from other people and corporations. 3D printers capable of outputting in color and multiple materials already exist and will continue to improve to a point where functional products will be able to be output. With effects on energy use, waste reduction, customization, product availability, medicine, art, construction and sciences, 3D printing will change the manufacturing world as we know it.

Samples of Trendy 3D Jewelry Items

Design Brief

I am going to create a digital file of a bangle. I will use Illustrator to format and create my design for the bracelet. Then, I will use Tinkercad to shape my design into a somewhat round shape. I want my 3D object to be a jewelry piece because all sorts of jewelry are in trend right now, especially the big/statement piece. By creating this 3D bangle, it will show that jewelry can be created in any shape or form. Furthermore, jewelry can even be printed at our own house if we can afford to buy a 3D printer. From researching about trendy jewelry colors, I find that, a lot of people like black and white jewelry. So, to match that I want my printed bangle to be white. White is a good color because it suits all skin tone and is a color that is very elegant and polite when wear. The design that is going to be on the bangle is going look somewhat like a lace or dentelle design patterns. I want to incorporate those sort of patterns because it looks really difficult and interest. If the product is interesting and eye-catching, then it will draw the costumers to want to consume the products.
