Counselor's Corner
We made it through the first week! I thought it would be helpful to share some specific information about my role within Winfield Elementary. Here are a few common questions that I get asked from families:
1. What does an elementary school counselor do?
Many people ask, “What does a school counselor do?” A school counselor assists administrators, teachers, and other school staff in promoting appropriate and healthy child development, learning strategies, self-management, and social skills. School counselors do not work alone, but rather play an integrative role within the total educational program at their respective school. School counselors work with students on such topics as: feelings, friendships, goal setting, grief/loss, stress, coping skills, career exploration, and many more!
2. How will I know if my child has seen the school counselor?
Anytime I meet with a student one on one I will reach out to parents either via a phone call or note sent home depending on the severity and concern of the reason why the student was seen.
3. Do I give consent for my child to see the school counselor on a regular basis?
Yes, your consent is always important. If I meet with a student who would benefit from having me check in with them for an ongoing issue, I will send a consent form home with your student.
4. Does a school counselor only meet with students one on one?
No, I see students in multiple different ways. I will complete some classroom lessons this year to address more global topics. I also offer small group counseling to address more specific needs for our students.
5. Does a school counselor assist families with available resources outside of the school?
Absolutely, from time to time I will provide students and their families with resources within the community for additional assistance and information when needed.
It’s important to note that a school counselor completes brief and solution-focused counseling. Although I hold a licensure with the state of Indiana for my position, I am not a psychologist who can diagnose or provide mental health counseling.
As always please feel free to contact me at any time if your student could use some support or if you have any questions! I can be reached by phone at (219) 663-2287 ext. 19108 or by email at jwilliams@cps.k12.in.us.

Positive Behavior Coach & PBIS
Hello, Winfield families! My name is Mandy Adams, and I am replacing the wildly admired Mrs. Sims as the PBIS Coach for your children. Just a little bit about me: I live with my husband, Matt, and our two children, Luke (12) and Lilly (6) in Dyer. We spend our weekends at Cross Country meets and soccer games for the kids, and in our free time, we like to play at the park, check out the latest children's movie, and simply, relax!
For the last eight years, I taught Freshman Writing and Composition at Valparaiso University, and while that was very rewarding and fun, I am ready and thrilled to fill my days teaching your children how to continue making good choices, and also, to represent our school as good students. I have spent this week already getting to know your children, which had allowed me to understand just how wonderful this Winfield Elementary Community truly is.
If you or your child need any help from me, please feel free to contact me at mladams@cps.k12.in.us or have your student drop me a note in my mailbox just outside my office door. To a fun year!

Birthday Celebrations
As a school we believe it is important to recognize students on their birthdays. To protect instructional time in the classroom and manage student health needs, we do not allow edible birthday treats in the classroom (this includes CANDY in treat bags). Your child's birthday will be announced on the morning announcements and he/she is invited to the office for a small birthday treat.
If you choose, non-food items may be substituted your child may commemorate their special day by bringing a small treat for their classmates (pencil, bookmark, sticker, etc.) or dedicating a book to the classroom (and placing a special birthday bookplate inside).
OPTIONAL: Families wishing to celebrate their child's birthdays at lunch may purchase Ice Cream Tickets for each child in the class. Tickets are $0.75 each. Please complete an order form in the office 1 week prior to birthday.
