Principal Message
Dear East Orient Families,
The end of the school year is quickly approaching, and we are starting to draw our attention to the many things we need to do in order to finish the year strong, and at the same time be ready for another great school year.
Like other 5th-grade classes before them, our fifth-grade students are currently starting the design phase of creating all our field day stations. Our field day this year will be June 15th, the last day of school. Over the last few days, I have been in the 5th-grade classrooms and have enjoyed hearing and seeing all their creative thinking and ideas. It's going to be awesome! I'm glad we've been able to offer our fifth graders this coveted tradition of creating the field day activities for the entire student body.
As some of you may have heard, buses and drivers have been difficult to secure during this season, so field trips have been put on hold for the end of the year. However, with some thinking outside the box by staff members and looking at supporting some science standards, we have partnered with our fabulous Parent-Teacher Club and secured an in-school field trip for Monday, May 23rd. Our PTC is sponsoring a visit from Oregon's Reptile man. This one-hour program is geared toward children 5 yrs and older where Rich ( the Reptile man:) presents reptiles such as a snake, tortoise, and lizards. For your information and peace of mind, any snake that would be venomous in the wild has been surgically devenomized for safety. Yes, that was one of my first questions :)) We're looking forward to exploring these fantastical creatures and how they have adapted over time to survive their natural and evolving habitats.
I want to thank you all for your continued support and appreciation. Last week during the staff appreciation week, it was amazing to see the amount of support and love given to the entire staff. Looking back at this year, it's incredible how we've navigated and evolved over the year with Covid and the return to a "normal" school experience. Your flexibility and trust in us is truly felt and appreciated.
Optional Parent Input Form For Next Year
Sending Home Obsoleted Reading Materials
Over the next few weeks, staff will be obsoleting our existing reading curriculum. One of the really nice things about getting a new curriculum for our District is that we are able to send home, and put into the hands of our students the reading materials we will no longer be using. Please check your child's backpack just in case they opted for one of the classes reading textbooks. These books are FULL of wonderful stories and beautiful pictures for your child to enjoy at home.
Gresham Barlow has recently adopted WONDERS as our new K-5 English Language Arts program. We are excited to start using our materials and planning our ELA instructional instruction for next year.
Kindergarten Enrollment Due by June 1!
The documentation includes:
Birth Certificate or Passport
Proof of Residence (utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage statement)
Immunizations (must have immunizations to start school)
End of day transportation changes
Please remember to call the school before 2:30 with transportation changes. It helps us to relay the information to the teachers in a timely fashion and reduces the chance of a change being missed.
Reminders From the Parent/ Student Handbook
Medications:
School personnel is only able to administer prescription or over-the-counter medications following these guidelines. Both prescriptions and over-the-counter medications must be transported to and from school by the parent/ guardian. Students are not allowed to carry medications on the bus or have them in class. (See exceptions in the district guidelines.)
Parents must complete a medical authorization form, and bring the medication in its original container that states the doctor's name, phone number, the dosage to be administered, and the time of day to be administered to the school office during business hours. The medications are locked in a cabinet and dispensed to the students when they come to the office. This does include cough drops and medicated lotions.
Birthday Celebrations:
We no longer allow birthday treats to be served due to food allergies, students with food-related health concerns, and religious beliefs, all of which create the exclusion of students.
Thank you for understanding.
Reminder Regarding Toys and Trading Cards

The phone must be off at all times, on the bus and at school. It is not to be used or shown to others. If a phone is seen by a staff member it will be given to the principal until a parent can make arrangements to pick it up. The school/district will not take responsibility for lost or stolen items that are brought from home.

School Assemblies
Celebration is a major theme this year. We believe it's important to recognize our students and let them know that we see and honor their hard work.
This year, our assemblies have the singular focus of being a time to celebrate students for their life skills, academic achievement, progress, and perseverance.
Our May Assembly will be held on May 31st at 2:00 in our gym. Parents are welcome to attend.
The life skill we will be focusing on and recognizing is COURAGE.
