This month, Klamath County School District is joining districts throughout Oregon to celebrate our school boards. The five unpaid, elected members of the KCSD Board of Directors put in countless volunteer hours to ensure the district provides the best possible education for students throughout Klamath County.
Our school board represents parents and the public in the complex enterprise of maintaining and operating 21 schools in eight distinct communities – Klamath Falls, South County, Henley, Keno, Bonanza, Chiloquin, Gearhart and Gilchrist.
“Our board members are dedicated to improving student achievement and providing a quality learning environment for all our students,” said Glen Szymoniak, superintendent of the Klamath County School District. “Their input and hard work is essential to the operation of our schools and district.”
We couldn’t do it without them. Please reach out and thank your board members for their ongoing efforts and all they do to make our schools a great place for learning! A shout out to our board members – John Rademacher, Laura Blair, Marc Staunton, Steve Lowell, and Jill O’Donnell. #ProudtobeKCSD

YES, ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
Why is coming to school every day important? Here is some information from the Oregon Department of Education:
Among all Oregon students in the 12th grade, those with attendance rates of 90% or above had a graduation rate of 91%. For those with attendance rates below 90%, the rate was 75%.
Statewide, in math, 66% of students who are not chronically absent meet state standards, while only 46% of chronically absent students meet the standards. For reading, 74% of students who are not chronically absent meet standards, while only 62% of chronically absent students do.
Statewide, about 83% of students attend school at least 90% of the time, while 17% are considered chronically absent.
If your child is well, please make sure they attend school. If your child is sick, please keep them home. Here are some guidelines: Is my child too sick for school?
SHASTA CLASSROOM ADDITION UPDATE
Fifth- and sixth-graders at Shasta Elementary School are expected to move into a new six-classroom addition by the end of March and finish off the school year in their new digs.
KCSD maintenance and project crew members were hard at work this week, polishing floors, tiling the bathrooms, and finishing up plumbing and baseboards. Next up is completing the exterior of the building, adding soffit and metal siding.
The new 9,500-square-foot building is between the main school building and Shasta’s Big Gym. It will feature a wide, brightly lit hallway, reflective windows, polished concrete floors, and the latest classroom technology. The nearly $1.4-million project is being paid for with federal ESSER funds. The project also includes renovating the exterior and adding two bathrooms to Shasta’s Big Gym. Read more

DISTRICT TO BE FEATURED IN EDTECH MAGAZINE
Kacie Palmer’s fourth-graders at Henley Elementary School last month showed EdTech: Focus on K-12 magazine how they use technology to learn. The students, under the direction of guest teacher KCSD Superintendent Glen Szymoniak (aka Mr. Glen), did their interactive math lessons for a photo and video shoot for the magazine. The math lesson utilized one of the district’s 86-inch digital interactive smart boards from Newline. KCSD purchased more than 300 of the Newline interactive boards this year for use in classrooms throughout the district.
EdTech: Focus on K-12 magazine is publishing an article about sustainability and funding of technology in school districts. The article will include interviews with Superintendent Szymoniak and KCSD Technology Supervisor Kiran Malakar.
In a second series of photos, the EdTech photographer and videographer captured Malakar in his office, working on a Chromebook repair. Malakar heads our IT team, whose members repair computers and other devices and distribute and update software throughout the district. We'll share the EdTech article when it is published!
