2018-2019 Reward School

Six Kingsport City Schools schools have been named among Tennessee’s best, announced as 2019 Reward Schools today by the Tennessee Department of Education. Dobyns-Bennett High School & D-B EXCEL received the designation based on results from the 2018-19 TNReady results. Additionally, Kingsport City Schools has achieved the top composite score of 5 in TVAAS system-wide literacy, numeracy, literacy and numeracy, social studies, and the overall composite. Science was a state-level field test last spring; therefore, no results were shared or reported.

Reward status is the top designation a school can earn in Tennessee. These schools were identified as improving overall student academic achievement and student growth for both all students and student sub-groups.

Reward School status is a key designation under Tennessee’s school accountability system. This was the second year Tennessee implemented its new school accountability system model, which was developed with educators and stakeholders across the state and examines multiple measures of success.

Student Supplies

At DBE we have minimal supplies requests for our students. We asked if each student could bring in the following materials the first 2 weeks of school. These items will be used during projects (projects are completed at school, not at home) and be available throughout the facility for student use. These items need to be turned into their Advisory teacher (except the 3 ring notebook). If families have extra supplies that they would like to donate, we would be very appreciative! Thank you for partnering with us to assist in providing the best education for your child!
  • Pencils
  • Paper (College or Wide Ruled)
  • 3 Ring Binder (At least 1 inch)
  • EXPO Dry Erase Markers
  • Colored Pencils
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Tissues
  • Glue Sticks or White Glue
  • Hand Sanitizer

Canvas Parent Accounts

At D-B EXCEL, we strongly recommend parents to create a Canvas parent account so that they can observe their student's courses. Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course.

*If you already have an account from the Canvas Parent App, log in to Canvas using those credentials.

To observe a student, you must obtain a pairing code from your student. Students can generate a pairing code by signing into Canvas then Click Account>Settings>Pair with Observer.

To set up your parent account:

  1. Go to https://kingsport.instructure.com/login/canvas
  2. Enter the following information:
-Enter your name in the Your Name field.
-Enter your email in the Your Email field.
-Enter your password in the Password field.
-Re-enter your password in the Re-enter Password field.
-Enter a pairing code to link your account to your student in the Student Pairing Code field.
-Agree to the terms of use by clicking the You agree to the terms of use checkbox.
    -Click the Start Participating button.

  3. To observe a student, you must have a student pairing code. Students can access the pairing code through their settings

  4. Agree to the terms of use by clicking the You agree to the terms of use checkbox.
  5. Click the Start Participating button.

Some notes on the pairing code:

    • For now, each pairing code will live for 24 hours. That means once the pairing code is generated, it will remain valid for 24 hours, then it expires.

    • Each pairing code can only be used once. Once it’s used in account registration, the pairing code expires and the observer remains successfully paired. If you want to pair two observers to one student, each observer needs a unique pairing code.
