Welcome to 2nd Grade!!!

About Mrs. McFadden

My name is Debbie McFadden. This is my 32nd year to teach school and most of those years have been in 2nd grade! Wow!!! That just made me feel really old! I absolutely love my job and l especially love showing my students how fun reading can be! I really like math a lot too, so we'll have a great year! One exciting thing about 2nd grade is we start writing in cursive this year! I attended Paris Junior College, then moved to College Station and graduated from Texas A&M.

I am married to Kelvin and we have 4 children. Hayden is 22, Kelsey is 21, Averi is 20 and Preston turned 16 this month! All of my kiddos have attended PISD. I have one granddaughter who is my pride and joy!! Her name is Brinlee and she is 3 years old.

Students will come straight to our hallway as they get here this year instead of the cafeteria. They will come into our classrooms at 7:20. The tardy bell is at 7:35. They will eat breakfast in the room. We will dismiss at 2:55. I walk the parent pick-up kids out. We will be under the awning where they went in first grade. It will be a bit crazy at first but it smooths out quickly!

The students will eat breakfast in the room this year. Someone will bring the breakfast trays to us. We will begin serving in the rooms at 7:20. We will have a mid-morning snack break. When I talked with many of you on the phone I wasn't sure how we would be handling snacks this year, but I found out it will be ok for me to pass out snacks for the class. Some ideas for class snacks are pretzels, crackers, dry cereal, goldfish, gummy fruits, etc. I will keep them wrapped up good in my closet and use gloves to hand them out. We go to lunch at 11:50. Half of 2nd grade will eat in the cafeteria each day and the other half in their room, then we'll flip flop.

Your child will bring home an Aikin folder each Monday or the first of each week. Please initial your child's folder and send it back the next day. I will also send home a green take-home folder daily. This will have the things we did that day in it and any notes I might need to send home. It needs to come back and forth daily.

Newsletters will be sent out through remind each week. This is what they will look like! This is done through Smore. In the event we have to go virtual, you will be able to pull the weekly Smore up online and see exactly what we are teaching. It will have links to the things you'll need in order to do the lessons at home.

Number grades are giving in math, reading, written composition (spelling/grammar), science, and social studies. Letter grades are given in the other subjects such as handwriting, health, PE, music, and art. If the number grade is circled, it was recorded in my gradebook. If not circled, it was done just as practice. If your child makes an unsatisfactory grade on a paper, I don't mind if you want to have him/her re-do it for homework and send it back the next day. I will average the two grades.
