December Events
Seventh Grade
The seventh graders met December 19th in the library to discuss The Cay by Theodore Taylor.
Eighth Grade
Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse was the book the eighth graders discussed in December.
On December 19th the seventh grade Book Club discussed The Cay by Theodore Taylor and the eighth graders discussed Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. They enjoyed biscuits, which were mentioned in both books, as well as other tasty snacks.
High School Book Club News
The high school is currently reading the novel, The Virgin of Small Plains, by Nancy Pickard. Small Plains, Kansas, January 23, 1987: Seventeen years ago, the brutalized body of an unidentified young woman was discovered in the snow during a blizzard in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Students, faculty and staff readers will discover the truth behind the murder in this small town as they prepare for the book club discussion Friday, January 23rd during seminar.
Junior English Classes Begin the Research Process
Mr. Stucky's English III classes began their research paper project recently with a visit from Mrs. Niland and a review of the online and print resources provided by the MV library. Some of the topics chosen by class members were offshore drilling, animal rights, organ donations, copyright infringement, and terrorism. In the photo above Shayla locates a resource about her chosen topic.
December Library Newsletter Contest Winners
Two winners were chosen from the fourteen correct answers of the December Library Newsletter Contest. There are seven books with "reindeer" in the title in the MV K-12 library. Paula and Cassidy each received Coldstone Creamery gift cards, courtesy of Mrs Niland. Twenty-eight students participated in the December contest.

Can Kids Fly?
Seventh grade Book Club participants will discover how kids fly in the dystopian fiction selection, Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson. By the end of the day, 14 students had asked for a copy of the book. The book discussion will be February 27th.
Seventh graders Emma, Sydney, Maranda, Grace and Madison are the first to arrive for the 7:45 a.m. checkout of The Angel Experiment.
Eighth Graders Read The Giver
The most recent book club selection offered to the eighth graders was The Giver. Checkout was January 16th at 7:45 am. This dystopian fiction selection was written in 1993 by Lois Lowry as the first in the Giver Quartet series. Other books in the series include Gathering Blue, Messenger and Son. By the end of the day 15 eighth graders had chosen to check out the book.
Lizzie and Emily arrived early to be among the first to pick up the new Book Club selection from Mr. Stucky. The discussion for The Giver by Lois Lowry is Wednesday, February 25th during seminar.
