Introduce the Lesson
Say: We’re spending a few months finding out the answer to this question: Who is God? Today we’ll learn that God is loving.
Share
- Tell kids about someone who loves you a lot.
- Ask kids to share about someone who loves them a lot.
Summarize
Open a Bible to John 15, and say: We all have people who love us. But no matter how much those people love us, they can’t possibly love us as much as God does. God is loving, and today we’ll find out about the ultimate way he showed his love to us. We’ll find out about God’s love in the Bible, which is kind of like a love letter from God! It’s 100% true and 100% from God. Let’s start by talking with God.
Pray, thanking God for his love.
Talk About Video
Kids watch a video and discuss the Bible point.
Discuss and Watch “Acts of Love”
Say: We’re learning that God is loving. He showed the ultimate act of love by sending Jesus to die on the cross for us. God does other things to show us love, too!
Distribute paper and crayons. Have kids each draw a way God has shown them love. Then have kids share with a few kids around them what they drew.
Say: Let’s see what some other kids drew to show how God has shown them love!
Watch “Acts of Love.”
Ask: • Which drawings did you most connect to?
Say: God is loving. He shows it in all kinds of ways! We can watch for God’s love at work in our lives today, and remember his biggest act of love: sending Jesus to die on the cross.

- flashlights
Easy Prep
- Make a sample craft to show kids.
Talk About Showing Love
Say: When we love someone, we want to show our love.
Share a way you like to show love, such as spending time with your little brother, helping your mother around the house, or calling your friend on her birthday.
Ask: • Tell about ways you show love to others. Kids may say they give their mom a hug and kiss, draw a special picture for their grandma, or share a favorite toy with their brother.
Say: Jesus came to show us God’s love and help us be friends with God forever. Let’s make something to help us remember God’s love for us.
Make Special Crosses
- Give each child a “Cross” handout, a piece of craft foam, and a pen.
- Have kids lay the crosses over the craft foam, making sure the dots are over the foam.
- Help kids use the pens to punch holes through all the white dots. Encourage kids to punch holes only in the dots.
- Give kids markers, and let them color all around the cross.
See the Light
Say: Jesus died on the cross to show us that God is loving. Let’s look through our crosses and see what we can see. Dim the lights, and use flashlights to shine light on kids’ papers so they can see the light shining through.
Say: We can see light coming through our crosses. The light looks like a heart! Show kids the heart on one handout, and lead kids to trace the heart shape on their crosses to confirm they understand. The heart reminds us that Jesus showed us God’s love on the cross.
Kids can hang their cross where light will shine through and remind them of God’s love.
Wrap up
Kids make a thank-you print on a paper cross.
Supplies
- large piece of paper
- washable ink pads
- wet wipes
Easy Prep
- Cut out a large paper cross. (If you’d prefer, just draw the outline of a cross.)
Read and Pray
Say: We’ve been learning that God is loving, and he showed his love by sending his Son to die on the cross. Let’s thank him for that gift of love.
- Set out the paper cross and ink pads.
- Have kids take turns pressing a finger onto the ink pad, then making two fingerprints on the cross. The fingerprints should overlap in opposite directions to make the shape of a heart.
- Pray: God, you are loving. Thank you for showing your love by sending Jesus to die for us. Help us always remember how much you love us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
