From Principal Dr. Barnette
October 7, 2022
Bike Safety Updates - Over 200 DÑO students attended our bike safety workshop last week. Here are the presentation slides. Students who have submitted a bike permit application will be issued a bike tag on Monday during late start (9:00 - 9:45 AM) or Tuesday after school. If your student was not able to attend our on-campus bike safety training, there are other options detailed on our bike safety website. If your student rides a bike, eBike, skateboard, or scooter, you are encouraged to watch this sobering video with them. In good news, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of students wearing their helmets properly and also riding in a safer manner on campus.
Free Meals Update - Beginning Monday, October 10, breakfast will only be served before school (7:45 - 8:15 AM). The “second chance breakfast” will no longer be served during the mid-morning break. This change is due to severe staffing shortages and also significant food supply chain disruptions. The district has been facing staffing shortages for quite a while and currently, 30-60% of our nutrition services positions are unstaffed. We anticipate slightly longer wait times for lunch because, beginning Monday, we will only have staffing for three lunch lines, as opposed to our current four lines. We are doing everything we can to feed our students healthy meals efficiently. Nutrition Services volunteer, substitute, and contracted opportunities are available. To learn more, contact Nutrition Services at 760-753-6241, ext. 3426, or refer to this job posting.
Principal’s Coffee Follow-Up - Thank you to the families who attended October’s Bagels with Dr. Barnette. Discussion topics included: updates on the recent threat, combating hate and bias, lunch activities and lunch lines, bike safety, Red Ribbon Week (next week!!), Yellow Ribbon Day, and the upcoming Color Battle ASB Fundraiser. Here is the slide deck for your reference.
Suicide Awareness and Yellow Ribbon Day - On Tuesday, our students were blessed to learn about suicide warning signs and the importance of asking for help from San Dieguito Academy Peer Assistance Listeners (~peer counselors). Following the class presentations, the SDA PALs spent time with our kids during lunch. If you need a smile today, watch this very short video from Yellow Ribbon Day.

Dropping Off Forgotten Items
To minimize class disruption please be aware drop-off items such as Chromebooks, PE clothes, homework, lunches, etc., will not be delivered to class.
In morning announcements, students are told to ONLY come to check the Forgotten Items Cart during the break, CAT and lunch. The office is NOT responsible for items not picked up by students.
Attendance Corner
· Report all absences to the Attendance office. Parents/guardians have 48 hours following the absence to verify and clear absences. After 48 hours, any unverified absences will automatically be considered truant.
· Call or email 24-48 in advance for an “Off-Campus” pass, if picking up students early for appointments. Students will need to pick up a pass before school on the day of their appointment.
· For the safety of our students, a Parent or Guardian will need to sign out a student through attendance in the administration building. Students cannot walk or ride their bikes/e-bikes home.
Thank you for your cooperation

Thank you Cougar Community to all of those who've donated to PTSA and signed up to be members. Strong membership participation allows us to have more of a voice at the state level. If you would like to donate and become a PTSA member please go to www.dieguenoptsa.org/donate. You are welcome to donate all year, however, we would love to see more funds at the beginning of the year so we can plan and do as much for the students as soon as possible.
