Langston Life

April 2023

Teaching and Learning

State testing for LMS begins this week! Langston's state testing schedule is below:

  • Ohio State Tests for English Language Arts: April 12-13 (all students)
  • Ohio State Tests for Mathematics: April 25-26 (all students)
  • Ohio State Tests for Science: May 2-3 (8th graders and selected 7th graders only)

Students will prepare for each test day by rotating through three different stations, designed to support the whole child! Station One is a "Breakfast Bash" arranged by our food services director, Mr. Philips. We kick off the first week of testing with a Fruit and Yogurt Parfait Bar on Wednesday (Day 1 of the Reading Test) and a French Toast Bar on Thursday (Day 2 of the Reading Test). For Station Two, students will participate in SEL (social-emotional learning) activities prepared by teachers in grade-level classrooms. Students will head to the gym for Station Three, where Mr. Orleman has arranged for a variety of activities to get students moving and energized!

Please help support your child by making sure students get plenty of rest the night before each test and ensuring they arrive at school on time each test day. Thank you in advance for your support!

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

CONGRATULATIONS to Hailey Petzak, Annalyn Bannick, and Mia Thompson for being our "Thinker" Students of the Month for March! "Thinkers" exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems and make reasoned, ethical decisions.

Family Engagement

While we don't have any major events planned for the month of April, there are many ways to get involved in your child's experience at Langston throughout the month. For starters, state tests are one way for your child to "show what they know" and you can get involved by encouraging your child to do their best while also helping to eliminate any stress that may be attached to state testing. Also, our track team is off to an excellent start and they would love your support at one of their meets. Please check the district calendar for dates! Lastly, as we near the end of the school year, checking PowerSchool regularly to access student grades is a great way to support the learning happening in school.
