The Sewing Machine

the machine that stitched its way into modern society

Who and When?

Elias Howe made the first practical sewing machine in 1845. He thought of the idea of putting the needle near the eye when he had a dream about a king who would kill him if he didn't create a new sewing machine in twenty four hours. He was just about to be killed when he noticed that the warriors' spears were near the head. He woke up and immediately went to make a sewing machine.

How Does It Work?

Elias Howe's sewing machine has the needle near the point. The top thread is carried below the cloth on a small bobbin. The needle fastens to the arm that vibrates in a pivoting motion. The movement pushes the needle into the cloth and carries another thread through a loop made from the upper thread. It could sow 250 stitches per minute.

Benefits

The sewing machine made women have more free time. They used to spend days on making clothes each month. Now, it only takes hours. With their free time, some started to do more work. Now, large factories use the sewing machine to make clothing that housewives and seamstresses used to make. This makes clothes cheaper.
