Eagles' Nest
Family edition - March 2018
Principal's Message
WMS Families,
The weather is getting warmer, and there are definitely signs that spring is upon us... this week (It is Missouri, afterall!)! The kids continue to learn and grow at Washington Middle! We will continue to provide great learning opportunities at WMS and prepare your child(ren) for the upcoming MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) test beginning April 17 (more information will be coming out about this in the near future).
As we become more dependent on technology for assignments and tasks at school, we realize that technology isn't readily available for everyone all of the time. In addition to some restaurants and libraries in the area that provide free wifi to their customers, St. Louis public libraries now check out mobile hotspots! Check out their link to learn more!
Did you know that human brains develop through their early 20s? Middle school is a crucial age of brain development. To help your child develop appropriately, follow this link for some basic guidelines! What they don't mention is kids also need about 10 hours of sleep and to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day!
Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all of your support at home! Middle school is a tricky age as students are growing and trying to find out what it means to "be me." I appreciate the time and effort you take to reach out to various members of the WMS staff and work as a partnership to support them! Thank you for choosing us to support you in the endeavor of creating the next generation of great citizens!

From the Nurse
This is a reminder to families that students are not permitted to carry any medicine (prescription or over-the counter) per Mehlville School District policy. Recently it has been brought to my attention that students had brought in Ibuprofen, Anbesol orajel and nasal spray. In the State of Missouri, a nurse needs a written order to give any medication, including over-the- counter. Students are allowed to bring / carry cough drops because Mehlville nurses have a doctor’s order to cover for cough drops.
This school year, the Mehlville nurses working in the middle and high schools have a doctor orders to give Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen ( Advil/ Motrin) and /or Tums. I have been contacting families, as needed, to explain this procedure. This does require completion of a consent form and verbal consent prior to administration of the listed medicine(s). This order only allows 1 dose per day for the maximum of 3 days. After that, families need to provide a written doctor order, the medicine and sign a different medication consent form.
If your child requires to carry emergency medicine (example Epi-Pen or inhaler), please contact Nurse Angie Thompson RN to complete the proper paperwork, if you have not done so already.
I want to provide the safest environment to promote your child’s learning.
Thank you.
Angie Thompson RN
